Transfer Case for '03 Dodge Ram 4x4 5.9L Diesel Automatic
My transfer case blew and I need to replace it. I'm a novice at this and only want to order online one transfer case and so I want to get it right the first time. The research I've done has lead me to believe that I need an NV271 transfer case. Yet when I go to some places to see what they have it turns out their proper replacement comes up as NVG271 or NV271D. What are the differences, if there are any between an NV271, an NVG271, and an NV271D transfer case? Will any of the three fit and work properly or do I definitely need just the NV271?

I will take a stab at it, not sure about the D designation, never seen that one, but the NVG is just the addition of the name Gear to the New Venture name.
You have a NV-271, and unless they made a LD and a HD version like they did with the 241, all you should need to supply is the spline count, which would be 23 for an Automatic equipped truck and 29 for a Manual equipped truck.
Just found this on Quad 4X4
"Dan the Gear Man Tech® Note 4:
When Ford (1999 models) and Dodge (2003 models) first used NV271 and NV273 transfer cases, New Process Gear (NPG) of East Syracuse N.Y was part of New Venture Gear (NVG). When NVG dissolved, NPG continued on under Chyrsler. Chyrsler subsequently sold the production rights to Magna, a Canadian automotive parts company. All these name changes are confusing, but the important thing to know is a specific assembly number for any 271F, 271D, 273D, and 273F transfer case is the same and uses the same replacement parts regardless if it was built by New Venture, New Process, or Magna."
Looks like there might be a difference based upon the shift position indicator switch? ( 2 or 5 )
Not sure how important that is. Parts for Dodge New Process NV271D Transfer Cases
Quad 4X4 is a great source of information.

All the New Venture transfer cases on Dodges have a round metal tag screwed to the back of the case. It has the model number stamped into it as well as an 8 digit Dodge part number (at least they all did back when I was in the business). That part number is what you can use to identify the specific transfer case you have, when ordering parts or a replacement assembly.
