Trans comparison

I just purchased another new dodge and was really wondering how the 46RE 4 speed trans compares to the ford and chevy 5 speeds, Any pros and cons?

You mean 48RE?

From the little I've read about it, it's not as sophisticated as the Torque-Shift or Allison in function but it's had fewer problems.

Before I purchased the new truck I called a friend at a transmission shop and he said that he new very little about it and that he has never worked on one, But he does work on a lot of the allisons and tourqshifts, So I figured that was a good answer.
I tow a very heavy trailer and need to know what changes or precautions I need to take now to avoid having any problems.

48re has been dodges best yet tranny having little to none problems as the other two as fords has had tranny problems forever and chevy had great trannys can't beat the 400 turboautomatic but the allison has had it's share of problems and shifts all to weird for me' up-down-down-up-up-down etc.
Your tranny will pull fine as long you are not WOT all day long!

My only complaint with the 48re is the functionality of the Tow/Haul mode. I have the '04 1/2 600 series and the Tow/Haul switch seems to be nothing more than an on/off switch for the overdrive. But I read somewhere recently that the '05's are more sophisticated with the use of the Tow/Haul feature and actually control shift points and the lock-up converter based on load conditions.

Does anyone else know this for sure? And if the '05 does have this feature, I'm wondering if it can be obtained for the '04 1/2 through a firmware/chip upgrade.

the trannie is better than the old ones., but i just blew mine with only 24k on it., if you are towing you shoudl have bought the stick., i tow a 10k lbs trailer., 2-3 weekends a month., and it overheated., and then just would not go in any direction in any gear,.

good luck .., as soon as i can afford it., i will be going to the 06 chevy., 360hp with 650lbs., plus a new 6 speed allison,

Agreed. A standard trans is best for towing for most people. You gotta be knowledgeable about vehicles if you are going to use an auto for towing. Most people only know how to mash the go pedal. Then they cook their trannys and blame the manufacturer.

agreed .... [ouch] ., i have gauges and monitor them closely., and have never had a problem towing before., been doing it for a long time., just plain sucked at 3:30am to have it happen.,

and not that any other rucks will not have the same problems, i just like the idea of the computer monitoring slip and defueling from there., it is almost impossible to feel the slip when it starts by foot.,
