I chose to weld a bung into the pan rather than use one of the screw in kinds. Here's where I put my plug...

Nice work. As you know the metal in these pans are very thin, if you don't tig weld you may not want to try the weld-in Bung, at least my 94 pan was THIN

By the way there is a good picture of the B&M type plug in the DIY Transmision shuder repair post at the top of the page in this Forum, it is in the first post.

Just did mine today, second change in 60,000 miles.

There was quite a bit of metal sludge on my magnet! About 1/8" thick! So I figured I better adjust the bands.

The rear is easy, tighten the adjuster to 6 ft/lbs and back off three turns. Then I drilled a hole at the right rear side and put a drain plug in. Put in a new filter and put the pan back on tightening the bolts to 13 ft/lbs.

I put 7 quarts in and fired up the truck in neutral. Didn't see oil on the stick so I threw in another quart. Took it for a drive to warm the fluid and checked again and didn't see the oil on the stick. Added a 9th quart and the level is just at the end of the stick. I'll need to buy another quart tomorrow because I'm out now.

So this change will take at least ten quarts. Don't know how you guys do it with seven.....

Dang man you dont happen to live in Houston do you? This is how I'd want to do mine for sure, but I don't have the stuff needed to do it.

The longer you let it sit the more that will drip out. The manual for the 06 says a pan and filter change is 4 quarts but only put 1.5 quarts in to start then add it slowly to the correct level, so those boys in the shop must really move to change the filter. I use between 6 and 8 quarts when I change my filter.

So, is the magnet in the pans something Dodge does? I bought my truck used and figured someone had been into the tranny before me and added it. My magnet had "fuzz" when I changed mine, does anyone know what that might indicate, the filter was a Dodge filter, so I doubt that it had been changed before (38K now). Mine took 7 quarts.

Yeah the magnet is normal. I had a fair amount of shavings on the magnet as well, but I wouldn't worry about it. On my truck that was my first change and I figure your going to get some amount of particles from the trans "breaking in", and then just residual "wear particles" after that. The filter on these transmission's leaves a lot to be desired, and act more as "pick up screens" than actual methods of filtration.

Yeah the magnets are OEM.

You'd find a Dodge filter on my truck. Dodge prices are pretty competitive for these consumable parts.

Not only is the magnet factory but there is a dimple in the pan that they want you to put it over to make sure it does not interfere with the valve body.

Thanks for the input guys, glad Dodge would throw a 5c magnet in the pan but not give us a drain plug. How much are the Dodge tranny filters, if I remember correctly the Napa filter was cheap, around $10.

The Mopar kit with a new gasket is like 30 bucks.

I used a filter from the parts store when I did mine a few weeks ago. My magnet was the same way and my fluid was dark. Very glad I changed mine out. I went with the Mag-Hytec DD Pan and it is a really nice unit. The mag pan has the magnet built into the drain plug. Dropping the pan was not near as messy as I thought it would be. Just get a big catch pan/bucket..

IIRC my filter was $22. with tax from Dodge. NAPA told me there book did not show/list a 48RE auto trans, they wanted to sell me a filter for the auto 545 used with the Hemi as that was the only auto trans listed for 2006 so I had to be wrong about it being a 48re. BTW when I had mine serviced it only took 6.5 qt's to refill it.

wish I had a Tig welder

That was a great job adding the drain plug Msiminoff !

Since I don't have such equipment, I had planned on getting a new PML transmission pan Geno's maybe for Christmas.
It has a drain plug. Will I need a new pan Gasket? I guess I might as well get the kit from Geno's as well.

When I drop the transmission pan, and the filter is there; Is it pretty easy to change? I don't want to mess up anything in the transmission.
