Towing and EGT's

I'm getting ready for a trip to Moab in a month and I'm thinking of the things that I need to do before we leave. I'll be pulling a 30' gooseneck with 2 jeeps. The last trip weighed in at 24,000# combined weight.

Now my question. What are some things that I can do to lower EGT's (truck in sig)? It seemed that pulling the hills through TN and KY really make the temps spike quick and that left me downshifting and heading to the slow lane in the hills. I had plenty of throttle left but when I got to 1200* I had to let off or back out. The hills of CO and NM will really be putting this setup to the test.

Will cutting the muffler out help and how much louder will it make it? I have searched on here and have seen many responses that say that you can push these trucks to 1400* but only in surge. Don't keep 1200* for extended periods. What is considered extended period? 5 Minutes?

I'm not ready to start hooking controlers up just yet. Maybe when the drivetrain warranty gets closer to expireing.

Suggestions?

I know you don't want to hear it, but I'd pick up a Smarty Jr. if I were you. Even on it's lowest setting it will increase power and decrease EGT's. You'll be able to pull and maintain speed on hills without as much to worry about.

Keeping the right foot out of the engine compartment is a HUGE help for EGT's be happy at 55mph, or slower, your truck will appreciate it.

If you are dead set on buying something. Maybe consider CAI, Exhaust (just a free flowing muffler is supposed to help), Intake Horn, exhaust manifold those should all help a bit with the EGT's and should have no effect on warranty if that is what you are concerned about.

Getting there slower in one piece is alot cheaper than faster behind a tow truck!

Stock, it should not exceed allowable temps. Before anyone calls me out on this, the factory set this engine up to be run hard and tow heavy. If it melts down that is what the 100k engine warranty is for.

I agree Nick, my first trip with my truck was all stock but I did put in gauges before I left town towing my 27' 5th wheel, it is no where near 20k# only about 8k, but going over some nice long pulls up mountains the EGT'S would not get outta hand, the truck would come out of OD and bring up the RPM's to cool it when it hit about 1300.

I always thought that in stock form, you couldn't get EGT's to high, the ECM would tell it to defuel to keep temps in check?

Replace the muffler with something better flowing and get yourself Quad boost fooler. You will really be a lot happier if you added about 60 HP with a Smarty or pressure box. They will roll the hills so much easier with a little extra power.

You can run 1200-1300 all day long and not worry. In fact, the 600 series are rated to 1450 degrees constant duty on the EGT's. I would not like to do that all day but have ran several minutes at those temps with no ill effects.

I just came back most of the route you are talking about with the truck in my sig grossing 23k. I am running a 4" Borlah muffler, Quad fooler, and Smarty on 60 hp tune, still have the CAT and stock air box. One had to work at it to push the EGT's over 1300 and it doesn't come out of OD very often. The HE351 turbo with a fooler will cool nicely into the mid 30's. Unless you wind it to the rev limiter, under rmost circumstances you will never see temps high too worry about.

I put 5" exhaust on my 06 to try to cool egts, didn't make that big of a difference, but it did help a little on a long pull. Still end up in the slow lane.I have been told by a local shop that you can pull them to 1350 if your probe is pre turbo. Makes me nervous to do it very long. I think i would probably start with intake side of things. Remember diesel is opposite of gas, rich makes it hot, lean makes it cool.

06 mega, edge juice att, 5" magnaflow, 295 75 17 toyo mt, leveling kit

My 05 will do the same thing, hit 1500 easily, unloaded not pulling anything.I have the same Isspro gauge, probe in #3 on the exhaust manifold. I have no way to check the guage, maybe it is a problem with these pyrometers? I am switching to a single SPA digital dual gauge boost/EGT.Maybe I will get a more accurate reading.

Just for extra cooling you could get a Quadzilla Boost Fooler. Its a great product and can really help take the edge off high EGT's if you're borderline.

With that being said, a cold air intake and a free flowing muffler will help out as well.

There are some members here and there on the site that run this basic setup and tow heavy all the time.

One thing you have to consider with advancing timing with any product is that you are lowering your EGT but you are going to put more heat into the cylinder.

With normal settings with the Smarty you would be fine, but more isn't really better when loaded.

I have the Isspro gauges and the probe is pre turbo in the rear bank of the downshoot.

Sounds like the best route is to open up with freeer flowing intake and exhaust. If I get ready to drop some bucks I'll look at some sort of programmer in the future. Not ready to drop $500 on a Smarty Jr. I haven't even looked at what others are out there...
