I have a broken tooth on the tone ring that keeps throwing a P-0036 code. How hard are these to replace????

 

You mean the one bolted to the front of the crankshaft? If so and presuming it is the same as the 2003's, then it is a short, easy, 4 bolt job.
Suggest doing the tone ring mod before installing the new one.

How on earth did you manage to break a tooth off?

 

I dropped a 1/2 rachet down the engine compartment while changing my fuel filter.. Dealer wants $296 to replace. I sure could use the money towards other things right now.. I would assume that I need to remove the serpantine belt and crank pulley to access?

 

I think on an 05 you will also have to unbolt the bottom radiator shroud bolt to get better access to the dampner bolts. I had to use a 3lb hammer to loosen the bolts on my 03 to do the tone ring mod. I also used the hammer to "Torque" them back down...
And yes, you have to pull the dampner off and then the tone ring comes right off. Do not take the serp belt off first. You will need that tension to help break the bolts loose. Pull the belt off once you have the bolts loosened...

Why can't you pull the ring off, build up a new tooth by welding and then file it down to size? That way you will save $296. As a bonus do the tone ring mod and gain a few free horses.

 

I couldn't use a welder if someone held a gun to my head.. Now if it was made of wood thats another story.

There is a salvage company that advertises on another site. He just parted out a couple 3rd gen Dodge CTDs. PM me if you want his info. I would bet he has one for a lot cheaper than new......

 

As mentioned before remove the lower fan shroud nuts/bolts... it it much more flexible than it looks and you can push it up and out of the way to give you easy access.

 

I took the liberty of sending him a message to see if he has one available for you...

On a 06 with a 48re trans, is it possible or feasable to do the tone ring mod along with the sencer mod?? I understand the sencer mod advances timming about 2*. If the tone ring is moded too would that advance the timming too much??

 

Do you have anything else to advance timming like a programmer?

If not I would think you'd be fine.. I know some programmers advance timing by 5*
