Tire question

I am just curious what is the biggest tire you can put on the 03 3500 SRW 4X4, can the 315/70R-17 be put on there without a lift and if so will it rub? If not what would be the biggest tire any of you were able to put on?? Thanks for your input. Mike

Re:Tire question

I haven't done it myself, but several guys here have put on 315/70R-17 BFG's with no other alterations, no rubs. I think everyone says they are a traction and ride improver. And they look sweet . Maybe this fall ???.

Re:Tire question

What about full lock turned to right and backing up. 295's on my 99' only rubbed a bit. But only in that particular case.

Re:Tire question

The 315's fit fine on the stock rims (check my pics). ;D

I go off-road and will cycle my suspension through its full articulation - so, I like to err on the safe side. Using the stock rims (and nothing wider) gives me the room I need.

Let me explain - if you get a wider wheel, the extra width is on the outside, that's positive offset. That wider wheel describes a wider arc as it turns. And, the first place it'll impact is the rear of the front wheel wells.

I put on a 2" front leveling kit just to make sure I'm O.K. (and it looks more "4x4" as well). I ran the 315's on the street without the 2" spacers for a week with no problems. But, it still would have been cutting it close off-road under full articulation.

Best to y'all
Bill

Utah,

I see from your pics you installed a Tuff Country 2" leveling kit.
Do they have them out for the 2003's or did you use a kit for an earlier model year?
How hard is it to install a leveling kit -- i.e. did you do it yourself? If you did it yourself, any special tools or expertise required?
Ever used leveling kits from other brands and if so, do you have a favorite brand?
Any comment on what make one kit better than another?

Thanks.

Re:Tire question

;D Hey F11. ;D

Most of the catalogs out still list the spacers as fitting the 2002 trucks. Same part# for '02 and '03 2500's (4x4).

Installation is not complicated but I've had my local shop do it 'cause they make it look easy. I'm not as young as I used to be and it's some work. It's cost me from $80 to $150 to do the work depending on what I have the shop do.

I've used the DayStar poly sets and the Tuff Country cast steel sets. I've seen no difference.

Please check this link at TDS to see my more detailed response on this same topic to a buddy of mine:

Leveling Front End

I hope this info was helpful, bro. I'll check back tomorrow and see if you need anything else.

Best to y'all
Bill

Re:Tire question

Thanks, Utah -- lotsa good info.

The instructions for that kit you used are online -- looks like a pretty simple install and the price is right -- think I might give it a try (once the truck arrives ).

But, for a more complicated lift like you're looking at, I've gone through Jack-It on 1812 West 3500 South in West Valley, phone #974-7960. They have a contract shop they refer to which is excellent.

Another business in the area (and I think there's one out by you) is Mister 4x4 - they also have good contract shops working for them.

My appt Friday is with Jack-it.
They seem to know their business.
I like that they take it to a truck alignment place afterwards that is very knowlegable about alignment on lifted trucks, and it's included in the price of the lift installation.

Also having them do the Bushwacker Fender Flares and Superlift Truespeed, so I won't get pulled over by West Valley's Finest : for speeding or tires sticking out too much.

Thanx

Do you know what the stock wheels backspacing is? I am wanting to go with the 315s but definitely want some new wheels too. Anybody have any pics of 03s with aftermarket wheels?

Thanks

Ed

The backspacing on the stock wheels is in the neighborhood of 6-7 inches, very positive.

You'll be very hard pressed to find an aftermarket wheel with that much backspacing.

My Welds, 16X10, came in either a 3.5 or 4.75 inch backspacing.
I went with the 4.75 since it was closer to the stock wheels, and they still stick out 2 inches past the fender.
The rim is split right down the middle instead of more towards the outside like the stock rims which put more tire "under" the truck.

I have the rub on the rear inside of the front fender whilst turning, but that's soon to be fixed with 4.5 inch lift.
(I can only turn the steering wheel 350 degrees before rub, almost one complete revolution)

Keep in mind with aftermarket wheels, the weight of the front end, not many "cast" wheels can support it, but most "forged" can.

Mine's not an '03, but pics are on page 20 of the Members Photos.
Might even have new ones Saturday with the new lift ;D
