Question three cylinder idle

At what temperature does the three cylinder cold weather idle kick in? (if equipped)?

I think 180*with E-brake on after two minutes, and it only idles up on all six not three like commenly thought.

Thanks for the reply,
during cold weather starting I know there is a 1000 rpm idle (on all 6 cylinders) that happens when the outside temperature is around -5c (23f) or the truck is left to idle for more than 2 min during cold weather.
But... how cold does it have to be in order for the truck to start and idle on 3 cylinders? (for the fast warm-up)

edited to add: If that feature even exists...

Minus thirty here and my truck sat out for several hours not plugged in while visiting some folks. Idled up to 1000 very fast.
No three cyl idle.

Even with just the high idle, this truck still runs smoother then my 01 at these temps. The 01 sounded like 3 cyls in the winter. It did not have that feature either.

Here's a link for TSB 18-019-01, but not sure if it applies to our 3rd gens: http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2001/18-019-01.htm

Additionally, if Intake Manifold Temperature (IMT) is less than -9°C (15°F), and all of the parameters above are met, three of the cylinders will be shut off upon reaching 1200 rpm, creating a slight change in engine sound which is normal. This allows the engine to create increased heat in the cooling system, allowing more rapid engine warm up and cab heating.
AH HA!! I knew I wasn't nuts!!

It just doesn't apply to 2003 and later trucks...
or could it already be built into programming??

-31 here now, went and started the truck. left it run...no 3 cyl run, it ramped up to 1000 and stayed there til I shut it off.

I'd venture to guess that the 3rd gens had the high idle only.

I did notice that I only have a slight smell from the crankcase breather now and no more exhaust in the cab after I did my own fix.

hijacking my own thread...
I have been following your other thread regarding exhaust smell. I was wondering if "the fix" would have any affect on the crankcase vapor smell... You have just answered the question. However, I am sitting here scratching my head wondering why there is exhaust in the engine compartment that is somehow floating up through the cowl and why your exhaust smell is now gone but the crank case vapor smell that also originates in the engine compartment hasn't disappeared.

Thanks for the tests...

I am wondering the same thing.
The crank case sure has a definate smell that is different then the exhaust and its not real bad to me.

Sorry bout the thread...it so cold here I cannot move to the other thread.
