thinking about a mega cab
own a 04 2500 qc 4*4 laramie great work truck this is my second dodge cummins, had an 01, we chase a race circuit that runs from florida to upper ny and goes as far west as branson ms, when 3 people sit in the back any thing over two hours is a miserable trip, our trips average 8-10 hrs, the mega cab would solve this problem, i am concerned about the extra 20" in length. during the week i tow my hydroseeder, excavator and cat loader in the good weather and plow snow comercially in the winter, we spend about 20 weekends hauling the race trailer/ camper the mega cab would be great for the weekends but will it perform as good as my 04 quad cab, what changes have been made to engine and tranny , my first post sorry for length of post

I just traded my 04.5 for a megacab today. The biggest difference to me is how much quieter and smoother it is inside.
As far as drivetrain goes, visually, the Injection pump is different. The wiring harness to the injectors is also different. It has the same power numbers as 05. The exhaust has a "resonator/soot collector?" behind the muffler quieting it even more.
The 06 Auto has option for OD off and Tow/Haul mode, where my 04 was only Tow/Haul.
Everything just feels tighter. My 04 was only a year old when I traded it with 45k, but this truck is much quieter and tighter than my 04 was new. The 03/04's were having door seal issues. You can see where Dodge smoothed out that corner of the door so it wouldn't catch the seal anymore.
Some of the 06's are coming with a plastic deck on top of the tailgate. This might be an issue if you have a topper to move. I don't think the MegaCabs have that. Mine didn't.
It goes without saying that there is a ton of room in back. I REALLY like the hidden storage compartments behind the back seat, and the extra storage under the center console seat.
The only thing that seems odd to me os the placement of the auto shift lever when it is in drive. It seems low.
I've only owned it for about 6 hrs, so I'm sure there are others out there with better info.
