Even stock, my 03 6 speed seemed to have a little more snap to 'er.

I personally don't find the 6 speed to be that slow a shifting stick. When running 1/4 miles, you definitely have to be a little more abusive to the whole driveline to keep your boost up, but I really don't think it costs me alot in the quarter.

And like others have said, the stick is far and away more useful when towing and working the truck.

Rod

Re:Test drove 48RE - questions...

I have a SO with the 48RE....I have NO problem out acccelerating Ricers

I loved the way it pulled on my trip, tough the ONLY thing that I can complain about is the short duration between 3 Lock and Overdrive...its only about 5 to 10 MPH [undecided]
Secondly, as far as acceleration, you were just being easy on it since the salesman was probably sitting in the truck with you ;D
That's the thing - the salesguy wasn't even with us in the truck! I took it easy for a couple miles through town in stop-n-go traffic, then turned onto the highway onramp, and let her have it as soon as we were straightened out after the turn. She pulled a lot better than my Jeep was and easily hit 70 before the end of the ramp, but it just didn't feel like as strong a pull as my buddy's last-gen HO/six-speed.
Chris
First, when driving around, is it normal for rpm's to have to hit about 1400-1500 when taking off from a light? I was driving it nice and easy, and it seemed like rpm's would come up to 1500 before it would move, then stay there until around 10 mph, and then rise as expected. The C6 in my other truck doesn't act like this, so I wasn't sure if it's what is expected on these trannies.
yup. this is correct, and absolutely the best setup for these trucks. Its called matching the engine's max torque output to the stall torque of the automatic transmission's torque converter. It optimizes your seat-o-pants meter off the line because it allows the engine to run at max torque. Were it not for that, the smile factor would be all gone.

Secondly, the acceleration wasn't quite what I expected. Given, the truck was about as heavy as you can get 'em - quad cab, 4x4, dually, and did only have the 3.73's. But my sister's 4-banger Sunfire would have out-accelerated this truck.
hmmm. somethings isn't quite right. maybe the truck wasn't warmed up or something. you should get a nice seat-o-pants feel even with the stock truck. At 1500 rpm, the engine is developing maximum torque which means you get pulled outa the hole. Yes, the 4.10 will improve the seat-o-pants meter off the line -- it will be a noticable, but not shocking difference.

The way I see it, the dually is optimized for heavy hauling and towing. otherwise you would be after a SRW or a 2500. Point being, if you plan to tow with the dually and an automatic, get the 4.10 axle. the automatic is a slightly higher gear than the autos anyway, and you get a higher GCWR with the 4.10 as well. what an animal.

If you don't plan on towing heavy, then get a SRW and 3.73s

One argument I can see in favor of the dually an 3.73 would be for a camper. much lighter than a trailer, but you need the DRW for stability. 3.73 would give you better fuel economy in that case.

But I'm a 6-shooter guy so what do I know about slush boxes

2 thoughts here.
First the cummins is not going to be at full potential till after break in anyway. My truck was a different animal after 20,000.
As far as quickness with the two trannys, I have the 6 speed and nothing can touch me...after 4th gear that is. I typically start out in second and it does take a little longer to get up to speed than in a auto, but once you hit fourth its a rocket.

the 48RE is a 4 speed with Lockup Torque converter, so you should go thru 4 gears prior to what feels lick a 5th gear or OD. Yes, they are very close together & they are the same in the 47RE.
