Is temps of 205-210 normal??

Something i have been wanting to ask here. When i was pulling a friends TT camper,(30 foot with slide out total weight of camper about 10K), at about 60-65 mph and after stoping at a store the temp rose(after stoping) to about 210 and didn't go down until i got back up to speed of 50 mph.(i left the truck running in netural a/c off).

I thought the CTD would cool back down when idling. The temp will stay at about what should be 190-195 on the temp meter normally. It never rose over 200 when pulling this load.
Does this sound normal, I mean for the temp rising when stoped and idling in N?

The temp should drop right down when you idle. Check your fan clutch to see if it quit working. If that happens, they will heat at idle and cool down when the air is flowing through the radiator again.

I believe that the temp your truck was indcating was correct. The centrifical clutch fan on the CTD's won't come into play until you either idle the engine way up or start to move.
This has been the typical case from my experience and from what i've been told by Cummins and DC. You will also notice this without a load on very hot days running the AC.

I've seen what supergewl described as well. Especially after sustained high idling in 75F weather while driving a 2kw inverter. Not sure of the exact temps, but temp needle was 4-5 hairs to the right of center when it normally rides 2 hairs to the left.

Re:Is temps of 205-210 normal??

Something that i didn't mention was that if the weather is hot enough to run ac the radiator fan cycles on and off like it should (fan roar) and when i pull up to a red light or stop sign and take off i can tell real easy that the fan clutch is engaged and this is no trailer pulling. But if i compare the temps from this situation to the one that is with pulling the camper it can be confusing .
What i mean is this, running a/c and no load on truck temp indicator doesn't get above the 200 mark before and during a stop and i have fan cycling (fan roar) that is probably why temp never gets over 200.
Pulling trailer no a/c (weather too cool) temps will get over the 200 mark when idling and no fan roar ?
When a/c is on what parameter is telling the fan clutch to engage that is different from when not running a/c
thanks for replys

Re:Is temps of 205-210 normal??

I just finished a 300 mile pull with my new 5vr and also noticed that the temp was a little bit higher that what I saw when I pulled my Travel Trailer ove rhte summer. All of this seems to be normal because of the extra weight going from 5k to 10k lbs the truck has to work alittle harder at moving the extra weight but the fan never kicked in even going up the big grades, actually it appears to like it more with the weight. The only changes that have been done since summer is that I put in a DC air filter and took out the AIRRAID and the dealership removed some of the tranny fluid do to them overfilling it when I had them flush it and put in AMSOIL ATF. I will say that it shifts alot harder now than before & I'm going to have them look at it later this week for that and also verify the tranny fluid.
Keep in mind I'm running an auto tranny the 47RE and no the 48RE.
All that said it all apppears normal and runs like hell with the 5vr attached.
