Synthetic, By-Pass Filters= Snake Oil???

Synthetic, By-Pass Filters= Snake Oil???

Hey guys, I've read tons of threads on here and Bobistheoilguy about this subject. I already run Amsoil and change @ 15000 with a filter change & make-up @ 7500.
My question is do you think the synthetic/by-pass filter is really worth the money or should I just stick with regular filters and Amsoil?
Or just regular filters and Rotella-t? Thanks Guys

it's been stated many time here and on the tdr that all the million mile trucks have run dino oil ...

but do whatever makes you feel good ... lifes too short

Well the same train of thought could apply to your question, that has you useing amsoil and 15000 change intervals now. Whats the advantage of amsoil and 15000 intervals? Bypass filter will filter finner ,cant get around that.
I buy my oil from SAMS 55 gal drum = $1.25 qt for last barrel. use super tech filters from Wally World@ $4.95 ea. change Q 5000 mi. Do it myself.At 20,000 per year this schedual will run the cummins longer then the truck will last. UNLESS you run ,lets say 100,000 a year. Then I'd say the amsoil ,bypass setup would pay .

Cleaner is Better

Check my signature. My oil is way cleaner then my buddies PS and my brother inlaws Cummins, at anytime. Right after an oil, 1000 kms, 2000 kms at the oil change, always. Cleaner is better. Besides, when you spend $150+ for 13liters of royal purple, you're a little reluctant to dump it every 5000kms (3500miles). Call them, ask them questions. I won't run a diesel with out a bypass filter. The main filter on your truck might keep small rocks out of the oil, but my bypass filter keeps even the small crap out.

A simple bypass oil system will benefit any engine using any type of oil. You don't need to spend a pile of money on one either. You can build a bypass oil system yourself with parts from the local auto parts store. Most all major filter manufacturers (including Fleetguard) make a filter that is designed to be a bypass filter, and it already has a built in orfice for oil restriction. All you need is a filter base, and some hose and fittings.
Even if you change your oil at the recommended intervals, your oil will be cleaner.

If you do run an extended drain interval, make sure you back it up with oil analysis. Some oils claim to be capable of very long intervals, but when I took them at face value a few years ago, I got a big surprise when I finally did do an oil analysis. I am not trying to start any brand wars here, just relating my experience.

As for the synthetic versus dino, if you do not live in a climate that gets below freezing, your fine with dino. Cold start is probably the biggest advantage to synthetics.

It is your choice if you want to spend the extra money for synthetic oil and/or a bypass oil filter. Your truck is still going to give you good reliability if it is well maintained. Some just want to "go that extra mile".

Well at $150. for 13 liters I wouldnt want to dump it eather. But at $20.00 for 11 qt of Rotella 15-40 and a filter I dont mind dumping every 5k. And when these motors seems to manage 200k to 300k + running with ROCKS in there, thats good enough for me.

Like others have said, a bypass won't hurt. If you don't mind spending the dough, I advise getting the bypass and running organic oil with 7500 mile change intervals (filter and oil).

Sorry I couldn't resist....

Pauly, I think the method you suggest is the best bang for the buck.

I plan on putting a bypass filter on my truck at some point, more because I like tinkering. If it never gets put on, I won't loose any sleep over it.

My wife's a bit of a "naturalist", if you will. She must be rubbing off on me!

I have the same feelings about the bypass. Sure I'd like to have one, but if I never do it won't bother me any. I'll still run "dino" oil (how's that?) and change it every 7500 miles.

Here's my oil/filter/change situation. I run a MotorGuard bypass system in my truck. Yes it's the TP filter. Prior to the bypass, I would change the oil and filter on my truck about 4-5 times per year or about every 5k miles. My plans since the bypass was installed was to change the oil and OEM filter once per year. I installed the bypass and changed the oil and OEM filter on July 4 week this year. Since then I've changed the TP 7-8 times or about every 1500-2000 miles and add about 1/2-3/4qt of make up oil each time to replace what is held in the TP when it's changed out. This TP change out takes about 5-10 minutes and I don't crawl under the truck. I also don't have any bulk used oil to get rid of either except at the yearly interval. I usually burn the used TP in my burn pit with the other assorted yard/house waste etc. I know some of you don't like the idea of doing this so often with bypass systems, but I like to spend quality time with my truck. It helps me earn my living so I like to check on her often!! Just my .02 cents here!!!

Your plan sounds fine, but I would still do an oil analysis at some point before you change your oil to ensure your not getting into trouble. It can be cheap insurance.

Sorry, forgot to mention that. I will do an oil analysis at 15k on the original oil regardless of time of year!! Thanks

I just installed a by-pass system. The way I look at is . . . . so many of us spend hundreds . . . even thousands on accessories for our trucks that don't do anything for the truck except make it look better (wheels, visors, lights, chrome, etc.). I don't have a problem with that . . . I'm guilty . So, to invest $200 on an accessory that actually filters your oil down to 2 microns isn't a bad investment. It's better than wasting your $ on a set of genitalia hanging off the back of your rig!
