Survey: 48RE
Because of all the concerns over the quality of the 48RE tranny, I'd like to compile some data on the subject. For those of you with a 48RE, please respond with the following information, and anything else you think may be pertinent.

Other: THis entire 48RE problem thing is exagerated. Some guy aon another forum said there is a possible problem with an oil slinger on the rear planetary gear and they will fail around 50K.
THey are warranted to 70K, if they start having massive failures, DC will recall them. This isssue needs to be put to rest.
Every manufacturer has problems. I personally wouldn't have a Ford Diesel and the Duramax is supposed to be good unless you tow, then the injectors are an issue. Fords auto trans are good their clutches on the manuals are not.
THe 48RE has not been out long enough to say it's no good. Personally I think it's a good unit.

Problems: Transfer Case Seals(2) leaking, (replaced) strange shifts and torque converter lockups sometimes.
Mods:ATS for tranny maybe
Other: Truck runs GREAT..Tranny is stout !!
My ONLY complaint was non approval of the Jacobs EB. My dealer
mislead me and said I could have one installed. Live and learn.
Living in Colorado, I really think a EB is needed for safely decending mountain passes. I will try the mountains without it
then make a decision. Prolly will do a ATS Triple Lock TC, VB, PacBrake, and ATS controller if I feel the brakes are over heating
after a couple dry runs. $4800 bucks for ATS mods.

Other: On occation sliding it into reverse there is a hesitation (2-5 sec) but then seems to work.

Other: Truck & 48re has been trouble free so far pulling 11,000 lbs. I am dissapointed in the exhaust brake issue. I waited to order the new truck with the 48re as it was advertised to be exhaust brake compatible. I attended the ATS seminar last Saturday in Denver and I will be knocking on there door if the stock tranny starts giving problems.

Funny this comes up> I spoke-w-a very reputable and honest tranny guy this week and showed him my new toy. He rolled his eyes when I said 48RE and said he does at least one a month. Mostly on Rams-w-Gas. He said the 48RE is a "glorified"Mopar 727. He said the main cause for melt down is fluid temps and that there is a check ball in the line that sticks and causes no fluid circulation to the rear of the tranny. For the heck of it he looked at mine and was really suprised at the improvement they made regarding the line size and the size of the cooler which he said was huge.
FWIW-please give me some input. I plan on "bombing" this truck as soon as funds allow. I cannot imagine going back to a gas daily driver.
Also if there are easy/cheap/effective mods to the 48RE please advise me. - Thanks
