They are one in the same. Nice and rumbly while idling but very loud when you get on the accelerator. I would recommend listening or riding in one before you do this. I did my 98 and within the hour I had put the muffler back on. It was just way too loud for me. I think it sounds good from the outside though.....

Doesn't a straight pipe imply no muffler? I think they sound great, but can be a bit obnoxious for some folks/neighbors.

TXPI,
Maybe what you were asking was if it sounds better to just take the muffler off and not replace it with anything, or to replace it with straight pipe. I think all will agree that putting the straight pipe in will be better than not having anything there. You may end up with exhaust fumes in the cab, setting off every car alarm within 100 feet, a very annoying drone, and with a truck that is extremely loud which will ultimately cause you problems with law enforcement.
If you install the straight pipe you will still probably set off car alarms but only within 150 feet..

hey may also be talking about straight pipe meaning no cats (don't the 600's have cats??) and no muffler meaning removing just the muff. and leaving the cats.
later, dustin

just straight piped mine and i love it. granted it is louder but not all that loud. inside the cab isn't that much louder but you will hear it. it sounds just like a big rig going by now.

p.s. bought the muffler elimination pipe form genos. the muffler was a bear to get off. had to cut both sides of the flange on the muffler before it would even think about coming off. many curse words were said.

I removed the muffler but left the cat on mine, has nice deep tone to it and not excessive loud. Sound level is comparable to a turbo muffler on a car, nice rumble at idle, and no ear splitting cackle when you're on the skinny pedal.
