stock clutch very notchy

03' completly stock with 65,000 miles and starting in 1st and second gear with no throtle the clutch is very jumpy and the same in reverse. No matter how much I baby the clutch it will always do it. its getting worse.

Any experience with this situation? What have you guys done about it.

I only have one suggestion. Call Peter at SBC and order a new clutch. One of the best mods you'll ever do to your rig.

3.73 gears, H2 wheels w/ 315's
Here is part of your problem, big tires with stock gears is hard on a clutch. Sounds to me like you are do for a full clutch job. Clutch, TO bearing, pilot bearing and the most important having the flywheel resurfaced. Your clutch is either warped, or ready to go out completely. Big tires changes the gear ratio making the clutch have to work harder on starts, hence overheating the pressure plate, disc, and flywheel causing hotspots or warping. While the new clutch job will fix it for a while, it will come back unless you change the gears in the diffs.

What type of clutch should I go with. I'd like to add 60 hp some day and do alot of towing and stop and go traffic. The clutch does not slip when fully engaged, just from a dead stop. I did the H2 mod to bring the rpm's down and get 22 mpg hand calculated. I did a lot of looking through the threads be fore but didn't see this as an issue.

i know what you talk about notchy. I think you are saying like it jumps when you don't give it throttle: especially in reverse. Mine has done it for almost 70k miles and I have 105k on it now and still catches fine, shifts fine, no grind. I put amsoil in trans at 50 or 60k miles. I think it is all normal. And the truck has had 33's since new. I wouldn't worry about it. Just don't speed shift and use the throttle when taking off it should last.

I think i'll just ride it out for now since I have no sliping when fully engaged. I looked at south bends web site but no pricing. Any idea what they cost?

Um, call Peter at Southbend. At least get an idea of what you want/need now, and know what to expect WHEN it starts to go.

It is a wear item, and going with a South Bend is just plain smart. You'll find NO better service than what they will provide.

The part of the city I am in the speed limit is 40-55mph in places and I average 17-18 on the interstate at 67 I get about 20-21 which ain't bad. The truck is at 104k miles as well. Aaron
