Status of 48RE and exhaust brake - ?
Does anyone have any further information than the attached from the Cummins web site?
http://www.cummins.com/na/pages/en/c...8B80C4A8F00000
"Q: Is the 48RE Automatic Transmission approved for use with the exhaust brake?
A: The 48RE transmission is a Dodge component and is covered by the Dodge warranty. Consult Dodge / DaimlerChrysler for official status. Unofficially, testing late in the 48RE development process identified an incompatibility with exhaust brakes. Design changes to both the transmission hardware and the control software are still in process as of February, 2004 and current validation is not expected to complete before at least August, 2004. If validation tests are completed successfully, this answer will be updated with specifics about which vehicles have the necessary transmission hardware and what is required to receive the necessary software/calibration reflash. The part number for the exhaust brake will be unchanged if / when warranty-approval is given by Dodge / DaimlerChrysler to install the Jacobs Exhaust brake on 48RE transmission vehicles."
My dealer really cannot find out any info and questions to DC fall on deaf ears. I do understand they are trying to beef up the 48RE to handel the EB but when will it be avail from DC..
Much appreciated.

There is a good thread on the TDR site about this. The short version is that they are working on it, they have what they think is a working setup, but they need to test it before giving it the thumbs up. They won't know for sure until their testing is complete. They did find a few issues already. Hence the updates in Feb.

Possible, but it seems that they are trying to make it something they can retrofit to the '04s. Why else would they make production run changes to the 48RE if not to make the trucks ready for a SW update?

Check on the TDR. Carlton Bale is a Cummins employee and has been very honest about the status of the EB development. The thread is sticky at the top of their 3rd gen engine/drivetrain forum.

Thanks again Steve. I have read the entire thread and I am pestimistically optomistic (sp?) that the tranny on my 04.5 will be capable of supporting an EB.
I have informed my dealer that they must confirm this before I will accept the vehicle. ( I would hate to wait for an 05. Besides missing fishing this summer I probably would not get the 0% finance option now offered on the 04.5 here in Canada.
Thanks again, I'll keep everyone posted on what my dealer says.
PS "My 04.5 is on a carrier on its way to Larado Tx as of 5/25
Cheers frank

Interesting requirements on DC web site for towing........
The full text is available at the URL below the text. The Terms and Conditions for towing with a Dodge in part .......
Quote
Exhaust brake or "Jake Brake" requirement An exhaust brake or "Jake Brake" is required for Dodge 3500 Pickup and Chassis Cab models pulling a trailer weight of 10,000 pounds or more
Fifth-wheel hitch requirement DaimlerChrysler Corporation requires that for warranty coverage, vehicles towing trailers with a weight rating of 12,000 pounds or more must be equipped with a fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch unquote in part
http://www.dodge.com/towing/D/basics...onditions.html
Does this mean that they cannot sell automatics for heavy duty hauling... Why else do we buy these vehicles?
Does Any one have any updates on the 48RE and Exhaust Brake Certification. My dealer has no information yet. The TDR forum has not updated with any new info.
