Stalls At Idle

This morning my truck would only idle for maybe 30 seconds and stall.
If I pushed on the go peddle a little it would keep running, if I put it
in gear It would move, as soon as I let it Idle it would stall. I drained
some fuel and it looked fine. So I changed the fuel filter even though it
only had about 4500 miles since last change. It did not start at first and I
got a P0628 code. It finally started and now idles fine and seems to
be ok. Could this be the lift pump, will this 0628 code show for any other
reason. Should I just drive it and see what happens or if the lift pump is
bad will this cause more damage? I have 76900 miles on the odometer.

Thank Walt

Looks like the lift pump is going out. Doesn't hurt anything when it goes out but it will leave you stranded.

I took the truck for a ride and it died a mile from the house had to be towed back.I unloaded the Welding machine and all the equipment not an easy task. Got a loaner truck from work and put everything on that. Had it towed to the dealer Wednesday.I talked to the dealer about an hour ago and they ask me what was wrong with it! He said it runs fine and they get no codes. Where did the P0628 code go that I was getting? Hold that thought the service guy from the dealer just called back. Said he went out and did the procedure I told him to try with the key and he got the code and had someone else look at it then decided it was the lift pump and has to order one. If not for forums like this I would not of had a clue what was wrong or how to respond to the service guy telling me they can’t find anything wrong.

Thank You
Walt

Me too!

On the way home from work last week I could not get the truck over 1500 rpm. It acted like it wasn't getting air or fuel. I checked for ice in the air filter (lots of recent snow). Couldn't find anything wrong. Got to town, changed the almost new air filter. Then I dumped in some fuel conditioner (I had filled up at a new station). The truck ran fine right to red-line. Half way to work it acted up again. That night I had the fuel filter replaced at my in-law's garage. There was no water in the filter and it seemed clean. The mechanic drained the entire filter cannister. Refilling it took numerous cycles of the key. Our suspicions went to the lift pump.

I stopped at the dealer's when I went through the city (70 miles away) to book it in (still on warranty). He asked if the check engine light had come on. Although it hadn't, he agreed it sounded like the lift pump. He told me there was some sort of update for it. When I asked if he meant a TSB, he looked surprised and then we had a more meaningful discussion about exactly what had happened. I told him that there had been no error codes either. He said this didn't make sense, but still thought it was probably the lift pump. If this is the problem, he said it is definitely warranty.

I planned on driving the truck to the dealer today, but it started ddoing what your's did. Start and stall. Start and stall. I called AMA and had them haul it in.

I should find out tomorrow what was wrong. Hopefully we both get a good (and free) solution.

As a follow up, I got the truck back. The lift pump was gone. They replaced it with an updated model that is located in the fuel tank, not by the engine. It runs perfect again. The dealer charged me no deductable. They did forget to re-program the high idle after they updated the software. I went back in and told them what was wrong and that I'd be back the next day for it. The service rep offered to try to get it done right away but I said not to worry. The next afternoon I walked in and there was a long line up at the service counter. My service rep was on the phone, but he waved me over and handed the keys to me and mouthed a thank you. The high idle was back. It is nice being treated properly, even if they did make the little mistake.

The strange thing I am noticing is the fact that even running on winter diesel I seem to be getting improved fuel economy lately. I have been running synthetic oil since new. Maybe the engine is finally breaking in at 80,000 km (50,000 miles)

How long did it take from when they got your truck until it was done?
I called Thursday and they still don't have the part said it was on priority rush. My truck was towed there the 17th
