Question Snow in AirFilter Box

Has anybody ever had snow accumulate in the air filter box while driving during a snow storm?
This happened to me this past weekend. I didnt know about it until Sunday morning. I went out to plug up the truck and the gauge on the box said the filter was stopped up. It definitely was. It was full of ice and melted snow. I took it in the house and dried out the filter and took a hair dryer to the box. It could have been interesting if I just started it. I went a bought a new filter didnt know if dried out one was still good. Is that normal, and preventable?
