Smoke at start-up Dealer say OK?
I've been just recently having problems with the '05 where it is smoking at start up and light haze at idle. The truck had a couple of time where is was rough to start after sitting with white smoke for about the first 5-6 seconds. But the truck starts right away. Also the truck is not making any oil.
Well I took it to the dealership where the said that they didn't experience any of the problems. They did do an injector kill test, which they said it was within specs. But didn't do a leak down test because it started right away.
When I picked it up, the truck did start right away, but there was what looked like white smoke upon startup. The Dealer's tech did say that they did see black smoke on start up but no white smoke.
From my experience I would say its time for injectors. But before I go & do that, I just want to make sure that I'm the right track. I just have old school diesel tech knowledge from small engine (basically 4L & under).
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem. I took it to the dealer and told them I felt it was leaking an injector so they tested them. They came back within spec, but it still smoked. It went back a second time and they still couldn't fix it. The service manager was like "well some smoke on start up is normal", I thought to myself, " wow, that makes me have a lot of confidence in your ability to diagnose a problem if you think that's normal." Anyway, I changed the fuel filter after if came back from the dealership for the second time and that fixed my problem. So check your fuel filter, it might be a simple fix.

You have the 3/36 Dodge warranty then the 100,000 mile Cummins engine warranty.

I'm pretty sure that the air dog fuel filters are not plugged. The unit was just installed last month. So maybe it has about 1000miles on it. Fuel pressure is around 17-18psi. When I get a chance this weekend, I'm going to be cleaning my air filter. But that only has about 7000miles on it. I would find it hard that is what is causing my issue.
When I accellerate, you don't see a constant black smoke. It's more like morse code, but with all short dashs.

Sounds like you have 1 or more injectors leaking down or sticking a little. Does it only smoke after it has sat for a while ? Sounds like fuel is dripping and it's burning off when you start it up. I had the same issue a couple times, dealer flashed for smoke at startup but it didn't do anything. I was running PS and then decided to try some 2 stroke, and it solved my problem.

There was a TSB they did on my 04.5 for a similar issue. I don't know if it applied to the 05 or not.
On edit, I retrieved this for you to look at.

My 06 (with 72K miles) started showing signs of injector problems last winter; hard start, rough idle, some light smoke, but it decreased as weather warmed - except the rough idle. I always exceed maintenance schedule on everything... oil, all filters, etc. Anyway, I'd always used PS in every tank, but about 3-months ago I switched to Red-Line Diesel Fuel Catalyst and that has made a significant improvement in overall symptoms, especially the rough idle and faster start-up. You may want to give this stuff a try.

Al Ex, I took your advise with the injector cleaner. I had PS around the house so I put in a extra dosage. That seems to be working since it is cleaning up the issue.
