I am pretty new to the 3rd gens as I just bought one not too long ago. I had a 99 2500 for a while and maybe because it's been so long since I drove it, and driving a car for a few years, that now I notice little noises more. The noise I am hearing at startup is just a faint ticking, like about 3 ticks in a row every 2 or 3 seconds. Once the engine is up to normal operating temp, the tick goes away completely. The weather does not seem to be that much of a factor, as in it still made the noise this morning and it was right around 60 degrees F. It seems like if the truck sits for a period of time it will start the noise on startup. Yesterday after arriving at work at 7:30am, I didn't go anywhere or start the truck up until after 5pm, I then heard the faint tick like in the mornings, and it went away once warmed up.

I am just wondering if this is normal with these trucks and I am just being paranoid, or if this could be a bigger problem like something getting ready to go out. I'll put my info in my sig a little later as it's pretty plain now. 2004 2500 (305hp), 2wd, 4 door, SB, auto, stock down to the filter. Thanks for any advice.

 

Mine does the exact same thing on a cold start up(no matter the outside temp). From what Ive heard on here, its normal. Supposedly its the air being purged from the system.

It does it exactly like you explain, and goes away after approx. 3-4 mins after startup.

 

i have a knock that goes away after 5 seconds...brand new rebuilt engine 500 km...

 

Mine is definately a ticking sound like izodhalo explains above....3 ticks every 3-4 seconds then after approx 4 mins, its gone...its done it since new

 

I watched your video because you described a similar situation. Your sound is def. different than mine. Mine is only just a slight, faint tick, about 3 or 4 ticks, in about every few seconds intervals.
