Hi there,

Looking for a simple in-line fuel filter and *maybe* a water separator, to go before the OEM filter on my '07. I have been changing my FF every other oil change with the Baldwin PF7977. I going to be doing a 5k trek in April and lord knows what kind of fuel stations will be along the way....

Unfortunately, I don't have the cash to purchase the FASS system. Just looking for something that I can put inline between the tank and the OEM filter - that won't be to harsh with the flow that would require a 2nd pump?

Is there a kit that someone can recommend to accomplish this? I have seen a few different fuel filter bases (appears to hold spin-on filters), but frankly I am a little overwhelmed. If anyone can tell me what base, fittings, and filter (unless an all-in-one kit exists) I need, I would extremely appreciate it. Budget is approx $200.

This is what I did on my last two trucks and it works quite well with the intank factory pump of my '06. Mount a filter base (Wix 24770 $21.20 at fleetfilter.com or Napa 4770) inside the frame near the transmission. To install this, cut the fuel line (larger one). This is the hardest part, you'll need a close quarter tubing cutter and use compression type brass fittings. I use a Donaldson P551313 or a
P551311, if a longer one is preferred. The P551313 is available at, ryderfleetproducts.com for $6.53. Both are two micron and are not a water separator. Some have said that this is not a good idea in cold climates, but since you in MS it shouldn't be a problem.

John, what size tubing is that line that goes from the tank to oem filter? 1/4?

It's a 3/8" stainless steel line, that's a bit hard to cut. The threads on the filter base (24770) are 1/2" NPT.-John

 

here is a little better setup. total cost $75 and way better and many times more reliable than the fass. uses 2 24770 bases like john's.

 

Thanks John and Carl. I actually purchased two bases, as I was thinking about either doing a water separator (just need to find the right NAPA part #) or build up a 2nd setup like this for a friend's '05.

 

carl48-I considered running two filters, which is a good idea, but I felt the OEM water separator would suffice. How often do you change the OEM fuel filter? I was thinking about every 30,000 mi. I'm running my aux. filter 15,000 mi. What are your thoughts? Thanks for your expertise-John

 

john we have several trucks with the factory installed oem filter still in them. think about this for a minute. the first filter is a 33406 wix true water separator and a 10 micron filter this will trap all of the large particles before reaching the 2 micron 33674 wix sub for the cat 1r 0749 filter. now with the fuel filtered to 2 microns the oem filter is just a safety net. never change the two filters before you get a drop to about 3 psi under load. the reason is the filter media has many different size holes in it the larger holes has less resistance to flow therefore more flow through the larger holes. as they clog up the fuel has to pass through smaller and smaller holes. the filter manufactor even has specifications on this. it is not uncommon for the filter to have a 2 times better rating at end of life than a brand new one out of the box. the first pix was a filter change at 150,000 miles. i usually get more but i got some bad fuel in montana. the filters are about $13 each because they are made by the millions for the big engines.

Carl and John, thanks so much for your assistance. I am going to go ahead with my 2nd filter base and do a water separator. I was able to get some Baldwin BF1259s (WIX 33406 equiv) really cheap and will use them before the WIX 33674 filter.

 

Here is what I have done so far. I had since reinforced the two brackets some as there was still some play with the filters. Also came up with a way to keep the water separator from banging up against the fuel tank.

I just now need to plumb them in and test.

 

here is some pix to help. we mount the filters just forward of the fuel tank. we run a fleet of dodges and recently installed one on a 06. there is two bolts through the floor board for a rear seat option at this location. some of our trucks use them others do not. get a 2" x 3" piece of angle iron 6" long. make a card board template that the two bolts and keeper nuts will go through hold the template on the inside against the 2" part and drill the two holes they will be about 5/8" i think and about 3 7/8 " between. center the holes on the 2" and near the edge on the 2" hold the angle iron over the bolts with the 3"part the furtherest away from the tank and drill a 1/4" hole between the two holes, keep drilling through the floor board. now after you mount the filters to the angle iron just simply mount it with a 1/4 grade 8 bolt. this is the only hard part the other items is easy.
