Signs of Dropped Valve Seat???

Hey all...

I have been doing some reading around the board but have never found an answer to the above question..

Reason I ask is that i did something a a little bit (ahem... VERY) stupid about a week ago and entered my CTD in a Burnout competition...

Well I ran the competition with the CL tune in and TST off. I had so much smoke that I couldn't see my pillar mounted gauges and should have let off due to this... but I didn't...

The truck kind of back fired once so I backed out of it.. everything seemed fine so I let it eat again... did this 2 more times before I finally wised up and said that's enough..

Well... after I got the truck parked and away from the crowds I noticed it was idling pretty rough and had a weird kind of POP through the exhaust.

Truck had no real loss of power. But I put everything back to stock just to be safe and drove it home..

By the time I got home.. No more pop through exhaust and idling almost as smooth as before.

Only ill effects since then have been a rough idle... and every once in awhile the truck will just kinda "shudder" like it missfired. Only at idle will it do this though.

Any Ideas?

I've never heard a valve seat drop on a diesel, but I imagine the effects would be similar to what happened to a 502 boat motor...The intake valve seat came apart and started smashing around inside the cylinder...you could hear the cylinder grinding the parts inside...reall nasty sound...one you don't want to hear. Plus with a turbo diesel, you would have shrapnel flying through the vanes in the turbo. Basically if things started coming apart I think you would know--it's pretty catastrophic. I shut it down the moment it happened (or within 10 seconds) and the piston, cylinder wall, and head were trashed. I couldn't have driven it home.

That being said, I cant offer a reason as to why your truck did what it did, only that I don't think things were coming apart inside that's all.

Good luck though!

Have seen valve seats come loose, run poor, hang the valve open, make noise and then the valve sucks it back into the head and run smooth only to start the same deal all over again.Over time it finally breaks seat, breaks the valve, ruins the head etc.

I would think you could check the valve clearance. If they are within spec I think you could rule out bent valve or dropped seat. If one is way, way loose or tight, then I think it would be time to pull the head.

take a look at my gallery, you will see a 3rd gen cyl. head with tulipped intake valves and exh. valve seat that dropped, the height of the exh valve were lower then the rest of them. all this from a injector stuck open slightly, but not enough to grenade the engine. it came in running.

If you think its a valve seat issue. See about performing a compression test on the eng.

Being someone who has dropped a vale seat, i can tell you this it knocks real bad lopes when you crank it, take the valve cover off and look at the valve tops one will be slightly higher. if your running it you probably just ruined the motor or if your licky just the head. they your able to fix my head and i was able to work the grooves out of the cylinder wall with a ball hone and mine ran for a total of 5 to 6 min. it never popped or backed fired but it did sound like crap. good luck
