Shredded Belt
Has anyone had a factory installed belt get the edge cut off? After digging the pieces off of the fan shaft I called the dealer and they were more than happy to install a new belt. It looked like when the person that installed it didn't get it all the way on two pullys. The shop mgr. said this wasn't the first one. I hadn't heard of anyone else having that problem tho.

Quite a few of us. Do a search on my name + belt shredding here and on TDR and you will have ALOT of reading.
There is a TSB for this now - tell them your belt was chirping and shredded. The TSB involves installing a new clutched pulley on the alternator.
My original belt shredded and wrapped itself around the fan spindle with only 5400 miles on the clock.

Mine did the same thing at almost identical mileage. Weird. I thought my truck was coming apart at the seams when it happened. It practically took an act of congress to get all the strands off of the fan.

There's another belt shred thread over on TDR at the moment. Guy with an 04.5 is now on his fourth belt in 45,000 miles. A couple of us told him about the TSB, but his dealer just threw on another belt, and never bothered to check for TSBs. Dealer said sometimes the shredding is caused by the strain of the belt chirp. Well....duh.........HENCE the TSB for belt chirp. I told him to call that dealer back today and INSIST on it.
When my belt went two years ago, there was no TSB, and they just threw one on. This belt now has about 20,000 miles on it, and looks good (knock wood), but I check it weekly.

Yeah, my belt's doing fine. This kinda reminds me, I've been wanting to go buy one to have on standby in case mine takes a dump while I'm out in the middle of nowhere. The stinkin' things are about 70 stones though.

Had mine replaced yesterday. they did the TSB and charged me 70 for a new belt. I was ticked off, but driving back from NH and i wouldnt make it back in time so i just paid over the phone. The dealer was also nice enough to tear up my wheel cover. Oh and my truck locked itself while running....without me in it.......again.

That business about the truck locking itself while running. I almost had this happen for no reason. Now, I always open my window enough to get my hand through in case it locks when getting out to open gates etc.
Does anyone know why this is happening? Fix?
