Mine has done it since day one and I have 20,000 miles now and it still does it. It almost always happens going from first to second gear when I accelerate slowly. If I get into the go pedal it will do it from third gear to fourth but only sometimes. My solution since I don't have a reputable tranny service station that I know of in my area is to get to fourth gear as quickly as I can I really would like to upgrade the torque converter and VB but don't know anyone nearby who can do it. It's almost like the torque converter is not locking up.

I have a new Mega Cab CTD, and mine does the same thing. If you are lugging along and accelerate slightly, it will run through a very quick upshift / downshift pattern. I never had a tranny act like that. Hopefully it's not a problem....

Ditto.. mine has had a 2-3 shift issue since day one. It happens only under light throttle (very light). The truck will do it's normal 1-2 shift, then will 2-3-2-3-2 or so very rapidly. It's annoying. I just give it more throttle.

I have it too, as do many others. Is ask this question over on the "other" site and someone said to unhook the battery cables for 15 minutes and it would take care of it. I didn't think these tranny's had logic, so I didn't bother.

I have the same problem +. I've owned about a dozen trucks I guess, all Chev except the last 2 have been Rams. Last truck was an 04 2500 4x4 Hemi configured identical to this one and it was great. The tranny in this truck is by FAR the worst shifting tranny I have ever had or seen. When warm, from Park it bangs into Drive, from Reverse to Drive it slams so hard into gear it snaps my neck back. Just brutal. Took it in and they said it's fine, nothing they can do. lol Just a matter of time before parts start failing. Sucks. It gets worse the warmer it gets. Plowing is a nightmare with having to constantly go from Reverse to Drive, over and over again all day. It also thumps into 2nd gear under normal acceleration. Is this normal for this version of the 48RE? Is everyones 06 shifting like this? Please say no

I just looked at a 46RE that had a similar problem. At low speeds, from first it would attempt a 1-2 shift, then would return to first, shift to second, back to first, and so on, several times, until over 20 mph. Found with a gauge that governor pressure was very erratic. Replacing a faulty governor pressure solenoid and transducer solved the problem. Don't know if the 48RE would suffer from a similar condition. Monitoring the governor pressure with a manual gauge would help with a diagnosis.

I am not thrilled with this tranny at all, and I hope it's not going to be a "problem child". In addition to the upshift / downshift issue, mine also shudders at times. When driving at about 40 - 50 mph, where you barely have your foot on the pedal and there is just a little load on the engine / drivetrain. The transmission will start to shudder, like it can't decide what to do. It's like it starts to unlock the torque converter and then stops. It keeps repeating this until you let off the pedal and slow down, or accelerate harder. I am assuming that this has an electronic transmission, that has to learn a shift pattern. I am going to go and unplug the battery cables today and see if I can get this thing to shift better.

Has anyone else noticed in the "06 Hard Start" Thread in this forum that there was a TSB or flash for the hard start. I think it was 68SS that posted the info below. Note what I highlighted from that TSB:
SUBJECT:
Flash: Long Crank When Starting And/Or Transmission Shift And Battery Charging
Enhancements
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves Flash reprogramming the PCM (Cummins) with new software.
MODELS:
2006 DH/D1 Ram Truck Heavy Duty
NOTE: This bulletin applies to Ram trucks equipped with the 5.9L Cummins 24-valve
diesel engine (sales code ETH) built on or after June 9, 2005 through and
including November 8, 2005 (MDH 0609XX and 1108XX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITIONS:
The vehicle operator may experience extended engine crank time in cold ambient
temperatures on vehicle equipped with manual transmissions.
This Flash also provides the following enhancements:
· Improved Automatic Transmission shifting· Engine fan is activated if the coolant temperature sensor fails
· Enhanced battery charging
---------------------------
Any thoughts on this? I hve this problem occasionally too, so I have been wondering if it is just me.
