Service Expense ?

I just finished getting a 24,000 km service and i have to say ouch ! Is it normal to pay $600.00 cdn for a front/rear diff service, fuel filter service, oil change etc ? They charged me $31.00/L cdn for 75/90 synthetic diff oil (240.00 total) just for the oil. This has to be done every 24000 km. If this is truely the case i will start doing my own service. I was just curious if this is what i should expect always ? Now if one does his own servicing how does it work for warranty ?

WOW, $31 a litre I cannot believe dealers charge that - how do they sleep at night?? (I was mad when the dealer charged me $30 for a fuel filter and $18 to install it...lol). I buy Shell Spirax full sysnthetic diff fluid ($30 for 5 litres) at the Shell bulk dealer in Edmonton and do it myself. If you did that work yourself it would likely have cost less than $100. Ill gladely spend an afternoon getting dirty to save $500 !!! I do virtually everything myself and have never had a problem. I keep a very detailed log book, that includes all services performed and keep ALL reciepts for anything and everything I buy for the truck including accessories. To my knowledge you DO NOT have to take it to a dealer for service.

BTW, you do not have to change syn diff oil every 24k...thats crazy.

Ripped is Right !

I phoned the dealer to find out what they charge for 1L 75/90 syn and they tell me 24.00, how come i paid 31 ? I will start buying my own oil and do my own servicing as well. What is the best place to buy filters and oil in the Edmonton area ? I noticed Genos online sells the 4/2/1 kits for 76.00 US which is pretty cheap. Any other good spots ?

Cummins service centre is in West Edmonton (a couple of blocks west of 170 street on 118 Ave) - they are open all day on Saturday's. If you drop buy on Saturday, youll likley deal with David (he is their pickup specialist). They will have virtually everything you need and can bring in the rest. Oil filters run about $12, fuel around $22, and air $25 (I thiink). These prices are for second gen 24V. They also have Valvoline Premium Blue oil, coolant etc. You can buy a Cummins Powerboosters membership for $25 which allow you to get 10% of all parts AND service.

I hope this helps.

You guys are gettting RIPPED OFF big time. I use AMSOIL 75W/90 @$9qt (retail), I pay less, It takes 2.5 qts front & 3.8 qts rear. If you get a 6pack thats only $54, $63 if you get 7qts. That a whole lot less than $31l I don't change oil at all so that doesn't matter. As far as the fuel filter they run @$12 from Cummins. Now let's see if I charge myself $65hr @ 3hrs labor thats $195. So let me see $195+$12+$63 =$270 for same work, however I get the satisfaction of knowing the diffs were really changed and I used a much much better quality fluid
Oh yeah another thing is with AMSOIL I don't have to change the fluid but every 2nd to 3rd interval so I really save money there $258+$258=$516 for the next 2 diff changes

Lucy,

Sorry, I'm not up on the Canadian dollar conversion. I just brought mine in for the 15,500 check. They charged me $286.00 U.S. and I brought my own oil and filter. I'm thinking about changing fluids myself.

Hey Lucy...Ricky says you got hosed!!! Go to Walmart next time and buy 75w90. (many choices). Last time I was there 9.95 CDN a liter. Might get your finger nails dirty.... Better yet trade in the diesel and get a gasser will save you in the long run. No offence meant just some of these threads baffle me why you guys/gals bought the premier industrial/marine engine without any grease skills????

Yes I have drivien across the Canada a few times. lets just say if you can do all your own servicing your self do it. I was quoted $400 for a front and rear diff, engine oil, and they were going to flush my transmission for free. This is the price all across Canda. the funny thing is people will pay it. its $100 for a oil change, cost for me to do it just under $40. front and rear diff $ 35, transmission $115. Fuel filter $15. the dealers are crazy to ask what they do> and as I found out most of them never even change the diff oils or grease the two nipples on the truck. All my own servicing, never take it to the dealer again unless something breaks.

1/2 the time the dealers have apprentices (kids) doing this type of service anyway.
