Royal Purple vs. Mopar gear oil???
Hey all...
Well I was in the dealer the other day and bought 8 quarts of Mopar synth 75/90 gear oil so I could change out the front and rear Diff Fluids...
Well I also stopped by 4 wheel parts and decided to get the Mag hytec rear cover.. That took all 8 quarts (AT $22.00 per quart!!!!!)...
Went back to the dealer today to buy 4 more quarts but they were closed..
SO here is the rear question... Since I used up all of the dealers Gold.. what do you guys think of the royal purple Synth 75/90 Gear oil.. Should I use it in the front or wait for the dealer stuff???

RP 75w90 for sure. I'm thoroughly sold on RP gear lubes. Not that there aren't other good ones but RP has taken care of gear lube problems I've had so I stay with it. IMO, the DC 75w90 is crap! Craig

Go with royal purple. I have heard DC Synthetic still need to have a addive for the limited slip, even when they say they do not need it. I have read some where that DC was now putting the Limited Slip fluid in the rear differentials due to the large customer complaints and warranty service about gear whine or chatter with out the additive.
Do a google search on Mopar Gear Lube or AAM Fluid Type.

That just goes to show ya' - anything can happen! In my case, I had a D80 that was in good condition and the gear teeth were nice and shiny when I tried Ams 2k 75w90. At 13k miles I had ring and pinion howling and the UOA came back very bad. Then I changed to RP 75w90 and after another 3k miles, the noise went away but the teeth were never shiny again. I also always had wear metal on the magnet. MANY 1000 miles later I replaced the carrier and pinion brgs but kept the same gears and by that time I progressed to RP 85w140. Voila... even after 24k on the 85w140, no more wear metal and UOA was excellent and for the first time ever, the temp was under 250, towing. I don't doubt that something can fail with RP but we don't know all the circumstances about yours and your friends but I'm sure something else was going on there - previous damage, didn't run the right weight, ran the level too low, etc. I've used other Ams products that were good but not all of there (or pick any brand) stuff works for eveyone, every time. I just know in my case that RP was successful when Ams and two other brands weren't. Craig

I used RP for the diffs and the PS fluid in my last truck. I just did my diffs on this truck this w/e with Amsoil. The Mopar junk that came out didn't look so swell! I should have grabbed some and sent it in for analysis. I just know I would never buy anything from the dealer that I didn't absolutely have too!
