Rough High Idle during Cold Weather

I am a new member to this forum; however, I have been reading this forum for a while and decided to join. Some real good discussions, unfortunate problems, and good solutions.

I have stock 2005 (e.g. no modifications) and has about 50k miles. After starting, the truck goes to high idle after about a minute or two; however, during high idle it sounds as if the truck has a hot cam. I change the air filter every 12,000 miles and fuel filter every 6,000 miles - strictly road miles. The air filter appears clean; however, the filter minder shows it is becoming a little restricted. I purchase fuel (ULSD) at two service stations on a regular basis and I'm afraid to ask the person behind the counter if the fuel is winter blend - since I may get a dumb founded look.

After about 10 minutes - I depress the accelerator pedal or brake and it resumes to a normal idle without it sounding as if it misses. There is no white smoke - and it rough idles when temps are near or below freezing. This happens with and without the catalytic convertor.

I do not think it could it be the CP3 pump or the pump in the fuel tank. Sensor? Injectors? Or do I need to change the fuel filter more often.

The truck is still under warranty. Thanks for your help.

It's the grid heater cycling that makes it surge

Black Sunshine

Does your 04 surge similar to mine? Do you think my grid heater needs to be replaced?

Thanks

No it just draws a lot of voltage when it cycles and when you high idle is up it pull on it. It'll be ok man

'05 with 56K here and I have been having the same issues recently with a mis at high idle and it occurs without the grid heaters cycling, and most recently when sitting at a stop light with my foot on the brake pedal and normal idle. I have the Quadzilla Box and it does it in all settings, on or off. No smoke. Runs strong. No CEL. I first noticed the problem this winter season. I have replaced filters, added Powerservice diesel cleaner w/ MMO, tried different fuel stations. The engine is quiet when driving. It misses/shakes like something is out of balance? I'm wondering if it could be injector related?

It is called 3 cyl idle. Only happens if it is cold enough. Some will say that 3rd gens don't do it, but I have experienced it in mine. The biggest thing for me is....no codes. If it were a problem, there'd be a code. These ecm's are very particular about engine misses and such and can pick up even a slightest miss. ( unless of course the ecm is telling it to do it like when in 3 cyl idle mode!)

I do not plug in a block heater. Mine is not isolated to only on first start up, although it does do it then too. It will do it after driving it for 2 hours, stop, let it idle up to high idle, then start to mis/shake. I'm not going to worry much about it, yet. No codes, fluids ok, no strange noise. Although the older the truck gets, the more miles I put on it, I tend to notice more vibrations, shaking, misses, etc and I try not to let it drive me nuts This is the longest I have ever kept a vehicle, they are usually gone with under 18k, but that was getting way too expensive

After I posted, I got to thinking that I may have highjacked the thread and that was not my intention Sorry to alramr. But hopefully what I posted can trigger some others thoughts and relate to the original post.

No offense - whatever it takes to get a solution. I heard of the 3rd cylinder issue; however, thought it only related to 03 or 04 models. My problem only occurs during initial start up and once on the road and sitting at a stoplight it does not occur. I will get it looked at and get to the bottom of it. My wife's brother in-law thinks it is a fuel filter issue which I know it is not. I tend to lean toward vmdude statement of ecm or injector issue or an earlier response of heater grid cycling. At least I have a starting point.

I still think its a rough running issue and not a 3 cylinder warm up suppose to do this issue. But hey what do I know.

Alramr, what micron fuel filter are you using? Could the rough running issue be related to the fuel filter? A while back, I believe the fleetguard filters changed a bit, and went from 5 micron to 2 microns. Anyone see any need to change the 2 microns more often?

yfz431,

I do know that Fleetguard went from a 10 micron down to a 7 micron. I've never heard of Fleetguard making a 5 micron let alone 2 micron fuel filter for our trucks. The only one I know about who makes a 5 micron for our trucks is Baldwin, part number PF 7977.

My 06 does the same and I'm sure it's the heater doing its thing.
