Rotella T "SYN" oil life ??

ok - did a basic search before posting this... I saw a lot of debate on AMSOIL/etc... was looking at AMSOIL.. but found out Rotella SYN oil can be found at walmart a lot cheaper...

question is how long can you go with Rotella SYN and how does it compare in quality to AMSOIL (in general ??)...

ps: I got a free tires for life deal as part of the truck buy.. .. I know it can be just a sales bs thing but I think I could work it so I would really come out ahead on at least a few sets of tires...What I have to do - is do the sch. maint. at the dealer... If I buy a oil change contract for 12 changes at $250.. that is $25 a oil change... if I can take my syn. oil to them and they do the change for $25.00 (filter and work) being $25 and use my Syn. oil - it is still not bad.. I would have to buy a filter for what $15... the other 10.00 the the work and I don't have to mess with taking the oil to pep boys/etc... I can then get at least one or two sets of BFG on/off road tires before I grow tired of messing with a contract and the truck starts to get miles on it...

Basically for $12 it's not a bad deal, however rotella isn't a true synthetic, rather a group 3 based oil thats legally allowed to be called 'synthetic'. Sometimes walmart jacks the price up to $16 or so. In any case, you can get amsoil hdd 15w40 diesel oil for $15/gal, and it's a fully synthetic based oil.

If you get as good milage out your BFG tires as I am with mine, you will have 180,000 miles on the truck when you install your second new set of tires.

I have 53,000+ miles and expect to have more than 60,000 before they will need to be replaced. They still handle well on the road.

Be careful that the Rotella synthetic is 15w40 and not 5w40. 5w40 is all I have seen at Wal-Mart.

Thats ok, the 15 isnt the important part, it's to 40. Basically it is just an indicator that oil flows much better at colder temperature than does its 15w-40 counterparts as it is "synthetic", which is actually better for your engine! The actual oil film at operating temp is the important part, i.e., the 40, which is the same for both grades of oil.
