Rotella Synthetic - does it stink like the conventional stuff?

I think the title pretty much explains my question, but....

I'm looking at going with Rotella synthetic, since it's significantly cheaper, and much easier to find than the Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme or whatever their synthetic version is called.

Does the Rotella synthetic stink like the Rotella (Rosmella) conventional oil stinks in the 3rd gens?

Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

I used to run the reg stuff in my 2nd gen and never smelt it. for the first 35k on my new truck I ran Mopar oil and now switched to Rosmella Syn and it stinks to high heaven. i wasent sure what i was smelling at first then I remembered everyone saying Rottela smelled and after a few hundred miles it got significantly less noticable but I can still smell it a little.

I use it. Can't smell it though. But it's harvest season and with all the corn and soy bean dust in the air my nose is full of boogers . Seemed to help the fuel economy a little, but it may just be the $3.50/gal diesel that's keeping my foot out of it

It does smell, but I don't think as much. I just changed to the 5w-40 2000 miles ago, and it is already black.

So that is why I allways get a burnt oil smell for the 1st 2-3000 miles after a new ooil change. I have never used anything other than Rotella Syn. except last oil change when everyone was out and even then I ran the conventional. Yes, you will get about 1/2mpg improvement in fuel economy over conventional, plus the added benefit of extending the service interval by 5-7,000 miles. As far as the oil allready being black only after a few thousand miles, have you seen how dark Rotella is fresh out of the jug???

That's what I think as well. The non syn doesn't bother me at all, I can barely smell it. Full syn I can deffinetly smell, usually for about 3 days after a change.

When I first got my truck I ran the Dino Rotella and it stunk to high heaven. As the miles racked up it seemed to smell less and less with each oil change to the point where it didn't smell at all. Once I changed to the synthetic version it came back strongly! It doesn't really bother me but the wife starts gagging everytime I come to a stop because that's when you really smell it...

I use it in my wife's 1.8t Jetta and it does not smell at all.
In the truck, I noticed that it had a more sharp smell than the dino version.
Although, the sharper smell was not as pronounced as the dino version nor did it linger as long.

Well crap - I mean - thanks for the input guys - I really appreciate it, but it looks like I won't be going with the Rotella synthetic. I can't stand the smell that the dino version gives out in these trucks, and if it's anything like that with the synthetic, forget it...

I used nothing but Rotella dino and then synthetic in my old Ford F250, and it never stank.

Any suggestions on a less expensive synthetic than Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme? The best price I've found it is $20 at Napa. I'm open to other brands...

Thanks again guys -

I hated the rotella smell at first and I was embarassed everytime I went somewhere, because someone would say, man how much oil did you spill when you changed it. Now, I am begginning to love the smell after getting out of my truck.

You know, I buy my rotella t dino oil at Costco ($36 / 6 gal) and it doesn't stink at all. The original did, and so did the oil i got from AutoZone. Who knows.

The reason we get the smell on the Cummins is from the open breather vent. The Fords are vented back into the intake like a gasser.
I just switched from Rotella to Delo 400. No more stink!

Thanks again guys -
Premium Blue Extreme and Rottela T 5-40 are not true synthetics they are a group III synthetic. They are regular dino oil that is refined soooo good it can be called a synthetic.

If your spending $20.00 a gallon for something fake, you can go to wally world and buy Truck and SUV made by Mobil and it is a true synthetic group IV oil for the same price in 5 quart jugs.
