Replaced fuel filter and it looked horrible?
I have an 05 CTD and replaced the fuel filter at 10K miles yesterday. It looked like it was dipped in used motor oil, the filter element was all black!
I didnt expect to see a solid black color on it.
Any thoughts? normal?
Thanks for the information

Being that black may be algae in your tank or the fuel tank of where you are getting your fuel. Better add some Silver Power Service as it kills algae. Some black is normal, but adding an algicide is a good idea anyway.

Not 100% sure it's algee in the tank. I think almost anybody changing the filter on the newer diesels are black. All mine have been black (3) and I use power service and have never had any water in my fuel (I test every now and then). I think it's just the filter media colors when used. But then again maybe there's more to this than meets the eye

What your seeing in your filters is asphaltene. A normal component of #2 diesel. Try reading this link http://www.filtercouncil.org/techdat...dieselfuel.pdf

I just did my first fuel filter @ 15K and it wasn't that black at all. I was really suprised. It was definately darker, but not black. I do use PS Diesel Kleen and MMO mixed in every tank, so maybe that helps.

I have generally changed mine whenever I change the oil, and they all have looked pretty decent, except for one slimy, black nasty one that I took out as soon as we got home from a trip out west to pick up steers. We were in BFE Nebraska on a Sunday morning and the only place to fill was a joint that looked like it was out of business but lo and behold had a neon open sign out front.
We pulled in and it took almost a half an hour to fill my tank, the pump was horribly slow, ostensibly due to a plugged filter perhaps. The truck ran pretty lousy and had no power the whole way home. I stopped several times to check for water but didn't really find any. Popped filter the next day and it was not only black but looked like someone had cleaned their shower drain and deposited into my filter canister to boot.
I should have writted a letter to ol' Wayne and Martha back in NE about my bad fuel.
