Removed muffler to "test"

Took my muffler and tailpipe off yesterday preparing for the "test" pipe due today. Had to start it and see what it sounded like...thought it might make a thunderous rumble with only the 5' or so of straight pipe out of the turbo and only the resonator left...much to my surprise, it hardly made much difference at all!

At idle, it is definitely a lower, raspy rumble but hardly what I expected given the remaining pipe. At 60mph (6spd) and about 1800rpm, not much difference in the cab. Noticed some good sound of off concrete walls when passing but not nearly as load as my 1st gen with straight pipe and no resonator.

Guess I'll see what I end up with after putting the "test" pipe in this afternoon.

update

Put the "test" pipe on last night and it mellowed out the raspy sound...sounds good at idle and throaty on mild acceleration.

Doesn't drone in the cab much unloaded, will find out if it does when the trailer is hooked up in a couple of weeks.

I guess I'm happy with the new sound...not quite as loud as the 12v but better than stock.

cat?

Not sure if that football shaped thingy is a cat or a resonator, but yes, that's still there.

I am confused about that as well. Have you towed w/ it yet? Does it drone bad?

The resonator is only in the Mega cabs and it is down stream from the muffler. so the football thing your are referring to is your cat.

not towed yet

I will be towing over the Memorial weekend, but so far, the new sound has certainly grown on me. Driving with the windows down is the best.

There's just enough turbo whine when you put your boot into it and a nice deep rumble at idle. Maybe the 6spd makes it more enjoyable and short-shifting keeps my rpm's under 2k while around town. Getting the rpm's up to 2500 or so and the exhaust sound is mostly replaced by tire/road, wind and other noises. It is not really loud when accelerating, more of a clearer sound versus a stifled or muffled sound...guess that's why they call them mufflers???

I don't expect the sound to be much louder under load given the day I drove it without anything at all behind the cat (i know what that thing is now!). I'll post an update if I experience anything different.

I highly recommend the "test" pipe.
