Good and bad of re-flash.......

Had the reflash done yesterday morning at the dealer. I confirmed twice with them the week before, to make sure they had the right people and software to do the job. When I got there at 8 am, they looked at me like I had 2 heads! I had to walk them through the TSB. Then they had to download the new version from the DC web site. Took quite a while. They also found that the exhaust clamp problem that was holding up early 04.5 trucks was never done to mine. Believe me I had heart failure when the truck was there for a reflash only, and the tech is banging away under the truck with an impact gun!!!!

Truck is smoother after the re-flash. I can still "make" it stumble with the exact combination of rpm's/power demand. I think they just reduced fueling in that region of the map where the problem was occurring. The reason I say this, it that after having the re-flash done. I took my 14K 5th wheeler to the dealer for service. There are a couple of traffic lites on grades to get there. To get the rig moving was a full throttle event! I can't help but feel that if the rig weighed a little more, it would have never started the wheels turning on the up hill starts. The performance is so different, that I was shocked. I have already had this rig to Florida, and she ran great! It has much less "pull" power after the re-flash.

So it did fix the stumble, but at what price.

Also, I reset the overhead mpg readout when I left the dealer to see if anything has changed in the mileage department. It was reading steady 13.4 up until this point. Now, its all over the place and reading like an instantanious mpg reading.

I'm going to run it back and forth to work this week to see how she runs. Wish me luck.

Fred, don't'cha just LOVE service departments? You're not giving me a warm fuzzy feeling about D'Amdrosio's ability to service our Cummins trucks (excuse me, yours; mine may be on Mars for all I know ).

I am very much looking forward to taking yours for a little spin this Saturday when we meet in in Exton. Try to keep close tabs on your mileage this week, and see what it does.

It's an update. So any built after sometime in Feb won't have the issue as they will have the correct software programmed at the factory. Otherwise the dealer reprograms the PCM.

This Is my first post. I have been looking on TDR and someone directed me to here. and informed me that others were having the stumble problem also.

I have had the same trouble with my 04. They performed the same TSB number that you guys are talking about. But from what I can tell this is only for the early 600s . Does it also apply to some 04s? any help would be greatly appreciated.
Do I have a 600 and just don't know it!! ( I wish)

The problem is more prevalent on the manual trans trucks. The torque converter absorbs some of the miss feeling (or for some reason the autos are harder to drive in the same region).

Either way, I bet you have a different problem that needs to be addressed. I would demonstrate it to your dealer.

Look at the tag on your engine (either on the Throttle position sensor or on the side of the vanity cover on top of the valve cover). It will give you the Hp at rated speed. If its 325, you have the 2004.5. It its 305, you have the 2004.

kubota, take a look at this thread:

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...threadid=41216

Might be something to suggest to the dealer.

Welcome jk1364. How do you like owning a diesel so far? I doubt you'll ever go back to a gas-powered truck again. Before you know it, you'll start wondering why no one makes a diesel powered lawnmower or chainsaw.
A TSB is a Technical Service Bulletin. Basically, if a problem/issue (not safety related) has been discovered and a fix has been created for it, then a TSB is issued for it. It provides the dealer with the description of the problem, the cause of it, and how to correct it. It's kind of like a recall except the NHTSA is not involved and the manufacturer does not have to notify you about it. It is covered under warranty, though.

Welcome dmccullock. I also saw your post over on the TDR and like bigblock2stroke said, just check the sticker on the engine. If it is an '04 305hp, I'm not sure why the dealer used that reflash. I have not seen the TSB, though, so perhaps there's more to it than what little I know about it.
