Rebuilt transmission options

I'm evaluating my transmission options in case its headed to a swap.

Dave Goerends just called me back and he suspects a converter may be enough.

If not, here are the options I see:

1. Factory $4k for a factory rebuilt. Converter not included. Dealer labor $1200. 80kmi warranty.

2. Suncoast. $3900 including converter. $900 to R&R at local shop.

3. Goerend $3250 including converter. $900 to R&R at local shop. 3yr/100k warranty, but I'd eat the labor.

4. DTT $5000 including converter. $900 to R&R at local shop.

5. HTS $2400 + converter ($1400?). $900 to R&R at local shop.

6. ATS $4300 including converter. $900 to R&R at local shop.

7. Local shop does the rebuild including a stronger converter, and some stronger internal parts. Comes with a 3yr/50k warranty.

My two strongest candidates are the local rebuild or the Goerend. Both are similar on price but the Goerend is more of a known thing based on reputation. On the other hand, the local rebuild would not leave me with any risk for the 3yr/50k time.

Any opinions?

sure wouldnt be the dealer transmission for me... I dont think I would take it to my local trans place anyways just because there are reasons places specialize in these truck transmissions. Id stick with a person that does LOTS of these transmissions, whether you go with Goerend or DTT or whoever.

If you plan on modding the truck or have modded it, spend the money now and buy the best transmission you can afford...dont do it twice. Id rather spend $5k with a billet goerend now, then get a 1/2 built transmission and brake it.

I have no plans to mod the truck. What worries me about the Goerend is having to eat the labor if anything goes wrong. Dave said that he'd look for a shop near me that he can recomend to do the install. If I can find a shop that will give me a parts and labor warranty on the Goerend, I'm there in a minute.

I'm in the same boat as you.. I'm leaning towards Goerends but my problem is that my transmission that I have now functions fine, but it's quirky. I don't have plans to add more power. As much as I'd like to have a built tranny, I'm having trouble convincing myself I need to spend that kind of money on something I don't reallyneed.

I'm leaning towards just a TC/VB w/ a kevlar band. That would be affordable and I would still get most of the benefits.

$900 for a local shop to swap trannys?

It shouldn't cost more than $400-500 for a shop to do that. I had quotes of $500-600 to remove tranny and actually install the parts in mine and re-install. Just swapping trannys is a piece of cake for a shop. I would keep looking.

I will indeed keep looking but I may not be able to do much better. The tranny shop has a $92/hr rate and the dealer charges $120. They're both calling the swap a 10 hour job. I think it ought to be more like 4-6 for someone with a lift who's done it a few times, but I suspect they're both quoting straight book time.

The 3200 price quoted above is the same as a Goerend box.

Go find your self a new shop as they are quoting you book time and they can do it in less time then the book calls for, that and noway would I pay $92.00 shop time. My self I say go with Dave Goerend as he does a dam good job with Dodge transmissions.

X2!

Find another shop to do the swap. Should be able to do it in 7-8 hrs with right equip/experience. The extra money involved in having the tranny shipped back and forth to Goerends is IMO money well spent.

No way it's a 10hr job...or even close.

To give you an idea, Dave Goerend removed my tranny and installed all the parts and had it back in and running in less than 8hrs. That's with installing all the shafts and other internals. Just removing and installing the whole tranny is a 4-5hr job tops.

You can drive to Goerends shop and get it done for cheaper than those prices.... Can you say "Road Trip".
