rear pinion seal
was checking things out this week end and noticed my rear was Damp around the pinion seal area. but only damp not wet. when i wiped at it it didn't smell like rear end lube. my question is 2 fold. do you think the asm. lube just worked out?
how does the pinion shaft come out? i don't see any nut. truck has 3800 miles on er.
thanks

Re:rear pinion seal
I had a rear axle assy failure and am waiting on a new assy to come in. Rear end was rebuilt about 500 miles ago due to gear whine, now it really raises cane. When rebuild took place the yoke was replaced but service manager couldn't explain why Glad to see your truck was finally shipped

Re:rear pinion seal
every brand of truck i've owned seems to croak a seal, maybe a t-case drive shaft seal, or a rear axle seal, all brands, all seals, different places and early in the life cycle of a seal! and to think we can live in outer space!

dropped of rig this a.m., service mngr called and said tech had looked at it and couldn't find the seal faulty! i told him to have the tech re-check, and look at the line of lube sprayed all over the fuel tank! why on earth would i waste their time and mine if it wasn't leaking? anyway hope this one hangs!

Re:rear pinion seal
Must be a common trait with American Axle. My '98 Chevy had the AAM axle and it weep a little at the pinion, axle tubes at the third member and at the axle flange. Never leaked though.
Mine hasn't started yet but it does weep a little at the check/fill plug.

the only thing weeping was me! mine was slinging it on fuel tank. funny thing is now it's not. "tech." must have listened to the Service Mngr after our second conversation!
