Truck is at the dealer today...rear end howl thats getting worse with miliage. Most noticable when leaving the house in the morning and the diff hasn't warmed up, and I'm in the 2-3-4 gear range and under light load (accel or decel) and even no load. I'm pretty certain it's there at higher speeds, but road noise covers it up...good thing for warranty.

Anyone else having this problem with an '05? It was an issue with some of the '03s....

 

I get it too... dealer said it was the tires. Changed the tires (free of cost, so I didn't mind), same thing. The service writer then went on to say that I was hearing the "torque of the engine" and that everything was normal.

Oh well, it's under warranty, so when it brakes, they can spend more money to fix it.

 

Shop forman did some digging and was able to pinpoint it to an area of metal resonance around my inline exhaust brake. Not sure if that explained how it was getting louder over the past few months. He did say he was able to reproduce the howl between 1200-1600 rpm while under the truck with a stethescope, so at least he did work at it for a while.

Fortunately they didn't charge me. Another point was that his only experience with problem diff's in the 05 was two - one guy who had no oil in the diff from the factory, and another who had a bearing not seated correctly.

As you say, I'll wait for something to break....it's under warranty.

 

Could be incorrect ring and pinion setup on the AAM 11.5"

 

It's the center (carrier) bearing in the rear driveshaft. Mine does it too, and its going in for a replacement (along with the door seals). Gets real noisy the colder the outdoor temp gets. Don't let a dealer tell you its normal.

 

Me too....2004 long box 2wd.
Sounds like an owl when cold.
Had centre/hanger bearing replaced last winter....worked for about 2 weeks.
Now I have a howl/hum when I tow my 2000 lb popup (heavy eh!), but only when hot.

I have had the rear u joint changed and the drive shaft angles checked for slight launch shudder under load ...dealer says all OK.(yea right!)

Short boxes as you know have a drive shaft replacement TSB, but not for long box.

I love the truck except for the driveline issue which nobody can seem to fix.
Not very nice having spent 50K on a truck that howls in the cold and howls when hot when pulling a measely 2000 lbs.

The centre bearing starting to sing again, now that it is starting to get cool.
I think I will try a different dealer.

Any suggestions?

 

'sounds like an owl' pretty much matches what i've got - but only when cold. Drive it until it warms up and presto, owl goes away.

Is the center bearing the same on the LWB as SWB ?

How many of these do we need to get a TSB out for the long box?

there is no carrier bearing in the shortbed. They use a single drive shaft. I had mine replaced last year and it has been fine since on my LWB

 

Hi All just signed up and I see I’m not the only one with this problem.
I have been complaining about this ever since I got the truck in Dec. 04. It only does it in cold weather and is gone when Diff. temp. comes up to operating temp.. My Dealer has called DC Tech line and they say the long wheel base does not have any “driveline issues at this time”. I hate to just have them replace parts without knowing what is wrong but as I’m at 31,000 miles I would like it fixed on their dime and not mine. I also have a transmission problem. It is an intermittent shift problem; it won’t shift out of first gear without letting up on the throttle. If I’m running 40 it will stay in first. I was told over at TDR that it’s is most likely a valve body or maybe a shift solenoid. The Dealer is thinking V/B other then these two things she has been trouble free. Sorry for the long post

If the truck is under warrenty have them replace everything you possable thing it is. Thats what warrenty is for. Use the crap out of it. Also dont let dealers tell you thats suppose to happen.

 

Mine too Has done it since new. As soon as the colder weather came back, the "hoot owl" came back.

I don't really worry about it, to tell the truth.

 

I didn't know that torque had a sound!!!!?????

what is this driveline tsb?? What other TSB's are there for my truck I know I have seen some on some posts but I can't recall them. And my 36000 war. ran out yesterday
