i started to post right above and retracked it... now I think I will post anyway.

people *** MAY NOT *** be reading the complete thread... so here I go on the 75 - 90 vrs 140 wt. oil.... If you are looking at the beginning of the post and ASSUMING that the 70 - 140 wt. oil is the correct wt.... I do not think it is.... I posted above on the beginning of page#2 that the GENO's TSB was a old release dated Jan. 04... and DODGE TECH AUTHORITY web site had a "newer" release of the TSB dated May 04... the DODGE tsb stated to use what the manual states... 75 - 90 wt... I am just noting this again because I still see people thinking/talking about using the 140 wt...

it alll... I may call myself in AM and find out...

The TSB I initially referenced at the start of this string that states the new recommendation for 11.5 is 75w/140 oil was dated May 11, 2004, and says it supersedes the Jan 13, 2004 TSB!

11.5 Rear Axle 6 mm (1/4 in.) ± 6 mm (1/4 in.) 3.6 L (122 oz.) - SAE 75W-140 Synthetic
9 1/4 Front Axle 6 mm (1/4 in.) ± 6 mm (1/4 in.) 2.2 L (76 oz.) - SAE 75W-90 Non Synthetic


Do you have a link or a copy of the TSB you could share that supersedes the May 11, 2004 TSB?

Thanks for the note... first let me say seems like I am half right...

You are indeed correct about the tsb at top of thread... don't know how I got it wrong but I did.. guess I have to many tsb's floating around... BUT I will upload the DODGE TECH AUTHORITY tsb ** dated the same day, MAY 11 *** BUT does not have the 140 wt. oil listed.... hmmmmmm. now this can get confusing....

guess I need to be more careful about trying to help...

We have the same rear end (11.5 AAM) as the GM HD series. And GM recommends 75-140 synthetic for heavy towing.

Wow! That makes it clear! There is no correct answer! You can choose which ever TSB you want to support your use of 75w/90 or 75w/140 oil for your 11.5 axle
Since I just put in the 75w/140 (and paid twice as much the 75/90 wt) and since it is so hot in AZ I will run with it.
At least both TSBs agree on filling to the hole

I would ask the dealer but I don't think they ever read the TSBs. Maybe this is why. It may be best to just follow the owner's manual unless you get a letter from DC telling you to do otherwise.

I just changed my diffs again (Mobil 1 75-90 synthetic) I have a Grande Cherokee that calls for 75-140 and I know DC are very proud of that oil as is reflected in their price. I just bought a case of the Mobile1 75-90 and I will use it up in the Front diff ( because of the cold weather that we can get up here,I will continue to use synthetic in the Front diff.) Who else makes a 75-140 synthetic besides DC for my next change?

Both weights are available as Mobil One products. I have a quart bottle of each in my garage because my wifes Ford Escape requires the heavier weight in the PTO.

I only have about 1000miles since I changed oil in both diffs
(mobile1 75-90) and after the new year I plan to pull my fifth wheel from up here in Canada to Daytona for the Daytona 500 and back to Vegas for the Nascar race there in March. I may only have a few thousand miles on it but I think I will look for the Mobil 1 75-140 and change the rear diff before I leave.

Unless I receive a TSB from DC in my mailbox I will follow the procedures as stipulated in my owners manual. I thought it was ridiculous that you have to change the differential fluid at 15K mile intervals, but it just keeps getting more ridiculous.

I think I will get both and mix them and have 75W115 and fill it to 1/2 below the hole .

Well, hell's bell's! I just replaced mine with Royal Purple 75/90! Saw this thread and ! Well, it's in the owners manual to use 75/90 and I haven't had problems. I guess it if it were a real issue, we may have gotten something in the mail to get it right. I don't know. But that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I too will stay with 75-90 until I get something in the mail informing me otherwise. And as far as filling to the bottom of the hole goes... I did that 3 times and 3 times the rear pinion seal failed, leaking and throwing oil everywhere. It would come back from the dealer low (or I thought so) and I would "TOP OFF". Only to have it fail later. Last time I measured down 1/2". 15k and good to go! Do what you want to. I have learned there are a whole lot of arm chair wrenches on the net.

I changed mine at 15k miles and filled with M1 75w-90, to the hole. The rear still looks ok but the front leaked a bit on one side. I'll probably try 1/4in below the hole the next time.
