Here's what I did: (you'll get a good laugh out of this)
I got the Bosch part # off of my sensor and called some Bosch dealers. Bosch part #0281002851. The B dealers I spoke with sell that part for $150-$165 plus tax or shipping.
I spoke to Oregon Diesel and the parts guy there pulled the one they sell for the 5.9 (listed by Mopar #) and read me the Bosch part # printed on it, and it is the same as what is on my '07. Bosch #0281002851. This is supposedly the latest version. Same #s = confirmation, right?
So, I wonder why some places sell a sensor for $85?
I called 1-800-diesels, which is Cummins' tech line, and was told that Cummins does not sell just the sensor for '07 or any 325hp trucks, that it comes only as an assembly- the rail, sensor, and relief valve. However, they do sell the sensor for the 305hp engines (Cummins does all their parts by engine serial #, so the guy used a serial # from an '05) and that the sensors might be the same, but don't count on it. I ask for the part # for the 305 trucks, and I'm told 3949988. $265.
I've always been told that the sensor for '03-'06 (build date) are the same...
I then called several Cummins dealers. One told me Cummins doesn't sell the part I need and I need to call Dodge. Three other Cummins dealers (Cummins Atlantic, Southeast, and one in Dallas) told me that the part that comes up with my engine # is Cummins part # 3949988. $265 give-or-take from each shop. One place had one in stock and the guy pulled it to get the part # printed on it. Bosch #0281002851. Same Bosch # and same Cummins #.
So, now I want to know what Cummins #3974092 for $85 is. I called another Cummins shop, and they had Cummins # 3974092 in stock. The parts man read me the # printed on it, which is Bosch #0281002851. Different Cummins part #, same Bosch part #. ?? One a lot less expensive than the other.
So, why is one $85, and one $150+, or $265 ?? Sounds like the same part to me.
So I call Rocky Mountain Cummins and they have both parts in stock. The guy gets them both and reads me the Bosch #s printed on the parts:
Cummins #3974092 says Bosch #0281002851 (this is the B # on my RPS)
Cummins #3949988 says Bosch #0281002534
Now I'm really confused.
I call Southwest Diesel, a Cummins and Bosch dealer, and their guy tells me that the part for my truck (again, an '07 5.9) is Cummins #3974092. This is different info than what I've been given before. He grabs one and it says Bosch #0281002851 on it. Same Bosch part # as my part, but different Cummins # than what I've been given by other dealers. So I ask what the 3949988 is. He gets that, and it says Bosch # 0281002534; not for my truck. So, we have a consensus at least on part #s, if not application, right? No. He opens the box, and the # printed on the part is yet another # .
He says Bosch 851 is what I need. Fine. Price? Using the Cummins # it's $85. Using the Bosch # it's $150... The same exact part... He wisely suggests that when I buy it I ask for the Cummins part.
Synopsis:
#1 Cummins # 3974092 usually = Bosch #0281002851
#2 Cummins # 3949988 usually = Bosch #0281002534
All Bosch places call for #1, and charge about $160.
Some Cummins dealers call for #1 and charge $85.
Some Cummins dealers call for #2 and charge $265.
It seems that the latest, proper part for 03-07 5.9 is Bosch #0281002851. This part # is printed on the sensor. Some places are selling it as Cummins #3974092, and some as Cummins #3949988, and are charging varying amounts. According to Bosch, the number has been changed several times, but no one could tell me if the actual part changed internally or in function. Externally, early versions are longer/taller, later versions are shorter and resemble the 6.7 sensor in appearance. I think as long as the part you get has the correct Bosch # on it that you'll be OK.
I'm going with Cummins #3974092 for $85, and will verify it says the correct Bosch # on it.

HAHAHAHAHA
Holy hell that is confusing... Thanks for posting that however. It's quite interesting (read: annoying) that some Cummins numbers have multiple Bosch numbers and vice versa (if I read it all correctly). If you get the one for $85 please report on what you find ON the box as well as IN the box.

What a nightmare.
I have a call into Pure Diesel Power, which is the place in the link in post #3. I asked them to pull the part and see what is printed on it. I'm waiting to hear back. As it's Fri night, I imagine it might be Monday before any word .

I got a call this morning from Pure Diesel Power, but they don't have a sensor in stock to look at. Their information is that this is a redesigned sensor, and is the latest version.
I spoke directly to a man at Bosch who verified that the #3974092/0281002851 is the latest sensor. However, he was unable to tell me if it is functionally different than the previous version. He did say that the older version, Cummins #3949988/Bosch #0281002534 has been superseded by new Bosch #0281002921.
