questions on lift pump??
hi guys, dads looking at getting the 06 RAM w/ the Cummins, test drove it and loved it, thing moves for 7000 pounds. anyway, id like to learn as much as possible about the Cummins engine, ive been looking all around finding out some interesting stuff. But what caught my attention the most was the lift pump and fuel pump problems. Ive heard alot about fuel pumps losing pressure and people adding the F.A.S.S system to help it, why arent the pumps good enough from the factory? what about the lift pump? whats the purpose of the lift pump? what are the signs of it about to go and why do these fail as well?
thanks for your time

When dodge went with an electric transfer fuel pump (lift pump) back in 98.5 models located on the side of the engine that is when the problems started. The lift pump and injector pump are two different things. The lift pump transfers fuel from the fuel tank to the injector pump.
The problem is that an electric fuel pump likes to push fuel instead of pulling and then pushing fuel. When the lift pump would fail the fuel supplied to the injector pump would be minimal causing the injector pump to over heat and lack of lubrication which in turn would cause the injector pump to fail.
On the dodge 05 models and newer the fuel lift pump is located in the fuel tank just like on gas engine model vehicles, so the lift pump problem should be minimized on the newer vehicles. The 03 and newer cummins also uses different injector pump then the older models. It uses basically the same CP3 the duramax uses.

Hi BlueBull,
I just wanted to drop a note thanking you for explaining what a lift pump does. I searched the posts and found this. Very informative to a novice like me. Looks like I should keep an eye on it or pay the price! Again, thanks!
My Best, Greg
