Question regarding BOOST values

I am always learning new "STUFF" about diesels...kinda exciting.

I installed my boost gaude yesterday and was afraid I had done something wrong. When I first started the truck, there was NO boost....I reved the engine, and still no boost. I rexhecked all hookups, connections, etc...but NO BOOST

Then I DROVE the truck and finally say teh boost gauge start to climb...once I put my foot into it I got up to 25 pounds, or so....neat to watch the boost gauge as the turbo spools up.

I was under the impression that there would be boost all of the time...but at 70 mph on level highway I am only running about 5 pounds...does this seem right????

Sounds perfectly normal to me. You'll only read boost when your putting a load on the engine. If I redline mine in park I can see maybe 2 lbs of boost but that varies from truck to truck.

all is good there.... boost is load dependent, not engine speed dependent... you can give it full throttle while not moving to bring it to high idle [governed 3500rpm] and have next to no boost, but while driving give it wot at under 2000rpm and you can get nearly full boost...

the turbocharger is a thermal/pressure driven device... no heat/drive pressure, no boost...

Sounds normal but then again, don't you want MORE BOOST

Time to start bombing that truck

I was wondering how that worked, I kinda had the same question myself

I know this comment was in jest but according to recent tests done for the TDR magazine, the stock turbo efficiency goes way way down above 24-25 pounds of boost. The intake air temp starts to skyrocket which is not what you want. Want more boost -- get a bigger turbo. Anyone bragging about more boost from a stock turbo is wasting their breath and courting a failure.

I agree. I had a PDR HX35 on my 1st gen and though I could hit 42 pounds of boost all day long and the EGT's didn't get super hot, I could feel that after 35 - 37 it just wasn't the same type of pulling power that it had around 27 - 35 or so. So though the numbers were still rising, I wasn't making power like it did when it was in it's sweet spot.

But then again, PDR's turbos are not stock turbos.

Bigger or twins would be the answer.

I can't wait to get gauges in my new truck. I don't dare do a thing until I can get a good baseline and then I start trying different things to get more power.

I am at the same conclusion.. I need gauges before I touch a thing!! I have had the dc computer ooked up to my truck trying to find the cause of some injector troubles and the tech told me when I was driving and he had it hooked up it showed 31lbs of boost he said that was pretty good and didn't say much more about it. I was wondering what the stocker was good for.

I agree....I still have to drill and tap for my EGT gauge, and after I get a base line, I hope to install a new exhaust system and intake kit....
