Question for the 6-spd owners...

Hey all,

Is there some trick to getting the 6-spd manual into Reverse cleanly? It seems to always be a bit of a struggle, but on occasion it's dang near impossible. So far I've tried shifting through the gates into various gears, then back to attempting reverse, then I've tried letting the clutch out slightly, and in areas where I was stopped on a grade, I tried letting the truck roll slightly. None of these methods or combinations of them seem to help. The truck is new (less than 700 miles), so I'm hoping that this loosens up with some miles. So, is this normal or am I just missing something?

TIA

I have 2200 miles my truck and it has loosened up a little but it never had a problem going into reverse. When stopped I just push in the clutch and it goes in. It sounds like there is something not quite right with your transmission.

Mine was really stiff at first, about 5900 on the truck now, alot easier. Also shifts better through the other gears.

I have about 7000 miles on my truck and the shifter has been getting smoother and easier since it was new. When it was new, getting into reverse was hard too. I just shift into reverse slowly and try to feel the bump going into 5/6 from 3/4 and then another bump going into reverse from 5/6.

Mine has always been hard to shift into reverse and has not got (gotten for you Americans) any easier. When it is particularly hard, I just go back to neutral, let up the clutch, push it back in and try again. It then normally slips right in. Sometimes if it is particularly balky I slip it into 4th and then reverse. It always seems to go halfway in and sometimes if I have no load on and on the level I take push it into reverse as far as it allows, and then holding gentle pressure on the gearshift, let up the clutch slowly. As soon as the clutch grabs it then slips the rest of the way into reverse.

Before I go into reverse, I give it a pretty good push all the way to the right, then up. Seems to slip right in that way. You need to make sure you are going far enough right before you push it up.

Mine slowly loosened up with time, I changed the fluid at 25,000 miles and it improved a lot.

I don't know if this is worth anything or not, but it seems like when the adjustable pedals are adjusted closest to the floor, the clutch pedal might not be depressing fully. I had problems like this and it seemed like when I adjusted my pedals up a bit higher, they seemed to go away.

Thanks for the info guys... glad to hear that I'm not alone and that most of yours loosened up with time... I figured that might be the case. It's a little better now than it was 1000 miles ago. For a while there it was quite embarrassing being stuck, crossed up in a parking lot, trying to back into a spot and holding up traffic because I couldn't get it into Reverse.

I can get it almost every time now on the 1st or 2nd try, still pretty notchy tho... can't seem to get over the bump from 5-6 cleanly yet... but I'll just keep on shiftin' till it's smooth!! Grind 'em till ya find 'em... isn't that how the old saying goes?!

Mine loosend up a lot over time. I now have 10,000 on it and it shifts reasnobly smooth. When it was new I felt like an ideot trying to find the gears. Now the only prblem is down shifting. It does not like going back down the gears at all. I sometimes have to push prety hard to get it to go into the next lower gear if I want to use the engine to slow the truck.

The six-shooter is not a good shifting transmission, a rough transmission, but seems to be very reliable,my 03 has 131k. miles, mostly towing, with no problems.

Hammajamma yours is never in any other gear but sixth! Maybe if you used the other geras it would loosen up.
