PS pump in relation to PS gearbox
I think the PS gearbox might be bad as my steering wheel won't return to center from 1/4 turn, and to move it back to center is kind of a static feel. The last time this happened it was the gearbox that went out.
So the gearbox is under the motor where the steering shaft and pitman arm join, but where is the PS pump. I saw the pump was about $100, how much for the new gearbox, and how hard to replace?
thanks

I would first say have the alignment/ball joints checked. If your steering wheel does not return to center, you could have to much positve camber. So, you could have a bad ball joint.

caster is the tilt of the steerin knuckle front to rear, that is what afects return to center (also involved is ackerman angle, sterring axis inclination and several other factors)
camber is the inward/outward tilt of the top of the tire.
power steering pump will have no efect.
factory spec for castor is only 4degrees. you can get a mild improvement in driveability steering feel etc by bumping to the 6degree range with out advere efects.

Balljoints were checked and they are within spec.
This is a power steering problem, either in the pump or gearbox. Does anybody know how much a gearbox is??? Where's the pump at?

I don't know how much the gear is, probably quite a bit more expensive than a pump though.
If you can find where to add power steering fluid, then you have found the power steering reservoir that is attached to the power steering pump that is belt driven.
