poor mileage

I have 8000 km on my truck. When empty driving at app 75mph, I get app 14-16 mpg. When towing a 6000# trailer at the same speed I barely get past the 10 mark. This can't be right anyone have any ideas?

jt

Re:poor mileage

I agree with Hunter best milage at 1800 - 2000 Instead of bombing I might would look into a Gear Vendors Overdrive unit. That would allow the speed to climb and the RPMs to remain low.
Jim O

Re:poor mileage

Driving habits at high speed have major implication on fuel economy. I also think that you're running into aerodynamic issues at 75 mph. I like the looks of these trucks as much as anyone; but they approach the aero efficiency of a brick at high speeds.

I can see a difference with my truck between 65 and 75 too.

Here's another one: I should loan you my old F350 gasser (single digit midget) - your numbers are stellar.

Re:poor mileage

cma1day,
I couldn't agree more. The 20 something plus mileage is nothing but wishful thinking. I can only get 20 plus if I fill up, reset the computer, hop directly on the interstate, get off at the first exit (which is downhill), put it in neutral and coast. I do this all the time to impress my friends when they want to know what kind of MPG it gets. ;D For a really honest mileage check I think you should run a couple of tank fulls thru it before resetting the computer. The best I have yet to get is 19.5 with most of the miles traveled being on the interstate. It may be possible for the 2wds with 3:73s to get 20 plus.

Re:poor mileage

I have the HO, 6sp, ext cab, long bed and 3.73 rear. I never rely on the trip computer and I don't baby the truck trying to get a mile or two more out of it. This is what I get, based on doing the math at the pump.

I have just under 10,000 miles

City driving: 18.2 is what I have averaged.
Hwy: At 70 mph I get 21.5. At 75mph I get 20.2. Above 75 it drops down to 18.0

It is so consistant I don't even check it anymore. I never believe the trip computer. According to it I am getting about 25 mpg on the hwy. I just calculate it the old fashion way. Also, I do not tow.
Re:poor mileage

I have the 48RE so mileage should be less than you smarter boys who bought the manual. My truck has 1300miles. In town I am at 16mpg, on my first road trip, first tank of fuel I obtained 17.5 on rolling hills for 400miles. Not hammering but not going 55mph either.

I hope that even with the Auto I will hit 19 after breakin and going to full synthetic but that might be wishful thinking.

What I was really targeting was above 12 towing after being told by someone that his v10 gasser was getting this empty at 70mph down the freeway.

Re:poor mileage

hang in there guys I thought the same thing until today my milage went from about 14.5-15 mpg to that of about 19mpg today that is empty. have about 12000 miles on it and driving 65 to 70 mph. Sure is a nice ride for a big truck wouldn't trade it except for a white one.

Re:poor mileage

My 03 HO with 4.10 gears with 10K miles usually gets 13.2 MPG with my foot on it and going 75-80 MPH down the highway. I get about 350 miles out of a tank on average. I started to baby it to see what I could squeeze out of her. The best I have gotten is 14.5 MPG going the speed limit 8) and not stomping on it. I have been able to squeeze 440 miles out of a tank. I love to stomp it and prob. won't stop I was just curious to see if the truck was capable of doing more distance per tank.

I towed an enclosed trailer with 8K out to Denver from Kansas City and got 12 MPG on average for the whole trip. I was very impressed to get that much. I kept the speed set at 70 MPH even through Colorado where the speed limit is 75 MPH on 70 HWY. It seems that 5 extra MPH made a huge difference on saving gas for the extra mileage. Lets put it like this if I was driving a gasser my MPG would be like 8 MPG.

Re:poor mileage

I was filling my beast up the other day and this other guy pulls up in a Ford power stroke, look about like a 96 or 97 F350. He said he had 4:33 rears in it. He said he wished he had gotten a Dodge. I said why? He replies he only gets about 8 to 10mpg on his truck with a new engine he had put in. That was empty. We were talking he said his buddy had a Dodge they were doing some hotshot work and his buddy had a trailer only 4 ft. shorter than his (don't remember how long he said) he said they were hauling about the same weight and that old Dodge walked off and left him as they were going uphill. I replied because of the 6 cylinder design with the high torque low rpm I just smiled and said have a good day. 8)

Re:poor mileage

So far, fingers crossed, I have been getting 20+ every since the first tank. Now have 2700 miles. My driving is all on secondary roads which makes speeds in excess of 65 a dream. The local law is very fond of those who do. All of the small towns nearby have a cop who makes his or her entire wage from traffic tickets. Lots of fun. My previous truck (3500) got about 12 when towing the 5er and 19-20 without. So, speed is the major factor in mileage. Try, if you can, a tank at not over 60 and see what happens. By-the-way, all this is calculated not the computer.

Cheers
Gordon
