Please Help 04 Engine Trouble

I have a 2004 2500 with 80,000 miles. Bought the truck through CoParts auto auction a year ago and it showed up with 4 bad rod bearings cooling fan with wires cut and a bad turbo. Had crank turned, replaced bearings, rods pistons and rings and turbo. Attempted to rewire cooling fan not sure if it works correctly. The truck runs really well for really short trips of a couple miles, however when it reaches 200 degrees it will hardly pull it self over 50 mph. I have taken it to 2 Dodge dealerships and a local diesel service center and no one can agree with whats wrong. When it warms up you can start to smell diesel and it then acts like it is starving for fuel. The only codes anyone has been able to pull is 483 and 480. St Joseph diesel said it has 4 week injectors however other people I have spoke with said that doesn't make sense.

I would appreciate any possible help trying to get this truck to run right.

Thank You

I would get the injection pump checked out maybe at a local diesel performance shop, they usually have the best equipment to test out fueling issues. Second have you taken the converter off to get checked out, sounds like it might be stopped up if your having trouble getting over 50mph warmed up.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was told by both dealerships and St Joseph Diesel that there was nothing wrong with the fuel pump. To me that's what it acts like. I screwed up on mph it is at 70 ( sorry ) I can be going down the highway at 80 mph the temp gauge hits 200 degrees and I can't maintain 70 unless going down hill. It runs like someone has crushed the fuel line.

Here's something to try that might shed a little light on this situation, rev the truck up setting in park or neutral to a little bit above 1500 rpm's, then let off quick if it doesn't idle back down normally then you have injector problems and that explains the sluggishness at the 70mph mark.

Where does the diesel smell come from? Check underneath the the CP3 and see if you are weeping diesel. How is the lift pump pressure? Get a new cooling fan and just eliminate that issue.

Check and make sure you are not making oil, diesel in the oil.

Also, check you LP fuel pressure. I know you install a new fuel filter during the rebuild. You really need a Rail pressure gauge.

Is the thermostat having an issue? Don't these trucks have a 190 thermostat? My truck stays just under 200 all the time. I have never seen mine at 200..
