Pinging??

how do you know if a diesel is pinging???

when at lower rpms 1-2K at lower speeds too and I get on the pedal, I hear somewhat of a clapping sound...is that pinging or just the diesel engine working itself at lower rpm/speeds???

just bought this new HO 600 today... need to know your opinions before I take it in for a check up..

I've owned a louder diesel so this clapping sound on this older truck would be normal....don't know about with the 600...again only happens at lower rpms/speeds when i accelerate hard.

BTW it's a 6speed... so eg. in 2nd at 1.2-1.3rpms I floor it you'll hear the clapping sound and when boost kicks in harder it'll go away... is it the diesel engine/injectors working themselves???

Normal???

help

Seems to sound pretty much like mine does, the 600 has a different sound compared to the older diesels not sure if that is a good thing but one thing is for sure....the 600 is a heck of a lot quieter.

The pinging that apears to be the typical diesel sound is created by the collision of flame fronts at ignition time. This was the typical mode of operation on conventional direct injection diesels, as these engines would inject all the fuel for that cycle at the same time. This creates a very high pressure peak on the piston sounding like a little man with a hammer inside the motor. Common rail engines actually use multiple injection events within a cylinder cycle which creates a smoother burn over a longer time period eliminating much of the typical diesel clatter. However, when the engine is cold and running fat, the clatter will return until the engine warms up. This is normal.

it happens even when warmed up fully... I don't know it may be normal.... just a slight clacck claackk at lower rpms and then boost comes so fast it's gone.....maybe just a bit more diesel like 1st guy said...

any other experiences???

mine does the same thing. almost sounds like spark knock on a gasser. i only notice this under underpowered acceleration. once the rpms rise its long gone. my father-in-law is a diesel mechanic by trade. he has worked on everything from detroit diesel to cats to cummins to international and everything in between maintaining his company’s fleet. he said it's normal.

I run Diesel Kleen from Wal Mart at every fill up and it quiets the beast down considerably .

Sounds pretty normal. Try a diesel additive and or changing where you get your fuel. It could also be from LUGGING the engine
