you can have the tranny built to accommodate a exhaust brake, something to do with the thrust washer/ bearing pertaning to the output shaft. you can go back and lookup the info. talk to the tranny o/h people.

Perhaps Pac Brake makes a unit for the 05,but the 48 re was not approved for it until 06 by Chrysler.

I believe the Jacobs was only approved for 06 and 07 48re as well and it was to do with the thrust washer. There are several older post about this, but I did read it somewhere else, officially if you want to call it that, perhaps it was on the Jacobs site I am not sure. http://www.jakebrake.com/products/ld-exhaust.php
I dot see any mention about a thrust washer here, this swich and bracket is $ 195 from Cummins in Canada

I have checked the links that everyone has provided and it looks like Pac brake does list one (C44052) for the 2005 48re. As some mentioned, a controller would be required. I would have bought the truck with the six speed but the wife said that she would not want to drive the six speed while we were on long trips.
A major consideration is that I still have a bit more than a year on the drive train warranty and hate to void the tranny warranty. My main reason for the exhaust brake is that we live close to and plan on spending quite abit of time in the colorado rocky mountains. My first really long down hill with the fifthwheel felt a little out of control and resulted in hot brakes.

Work on the transmission to allow it to operate with the exhaust brake was also mentioned. Has anyone tried this, was it very expensive or would it be better to invest in one of the rebuilt transmissions that I have read about? I would like to make this truck work as it runs good, gets good milage (20-22) and most important is paid for.

I got the Pac Brake rocker switch on my stick, it was NO WHERE near 200 bucks though, ouch!

Flora, call Pac Brake, they'll give you the straight goods. I'm not doubting everyone else but I don't think they'd sell you an ex brk if it was gonna screw up your tranny.

BTW, I got a stick for me, no one else drives it but I knew I was going to be adding some HP and a clutch is way cheaper than a built auto.
Have only had a stick in my trucks for 30 years, wouldn't have it any other way (and I'm used to doing all the driving!)

I have a BD brake, with a torque convertor clutch lockup box from them as well. The main issue with exhaust braking with an auto tranny is that when the tcc is off, the tranny just slips through the torque convertor. This heats up the tranny and your effective braking is very low. The BD device is called an 'autoloc' and was about $200 if I remember right.

With the tcc locked up the braking is pretty good. I've had my 12.5k boat heading down a pretty steep grade (Out of Port Alberni BC, not sure if you've even been there, monster hill), and it held 80k in drive, no brakes from the truck (trailer surges were on though).

It made it pretty comfortable. In 2nd gear it really pulls down well.

Pre 06 you will need a control module as there is no programming in the ECM for an EB. On the 06-07 5.9 the ECM comes preloaded/programmed for an EB. Pac. Banks, Jacobs use the exact two ECM terminals connection points to control them as well as ignition power and constant 12v power. Call Pac they set you up right.

I have the same year truck and auto trans that you have and I've been running the Pacbrake for almost 3yrs now. The thing has been an absolute pleasure to have with no trans problems at all. Just this past august I pulled my 5th wheel over some mountain passes in Colorado and the holding back power the unit has is incredible, some times I actually had tap the gas pedel to speed up a bit. On the auto it takes a little getting use to, like when it will engage, how slow it will stay engaged to and what rpm, how to lightly tap the accelerator to disengage the brake but not fuel the truck (this is for basically when going down hills and the brake slows you down too much and you want to coast a bit), when to manually downshift for REALLY steep switchbacks when you need to run a slower pace but want to keep the brake operational (normally cuts out at about 30mph if you leave it in drive). These little things take no time at all learn and you'll wonder how you ever did without it especially if you tow in the mountains. The rapid warmup feature is nice too.

Thanks for everyones input. A local big rig dealer (I was surprised to find someone that delt with pacbrake in our little town) checked with pacbrake concerning my year truck and said the stock number was C44052 as another had indicated. Said he would be glad to install it for 90 dollars an hour. He figured about 5-6 hours.

Sticky, glad to hear that someone has had good success with this setup. Your post has convinced me to go with the Pacbrake. The truck shop that I talked with deals with Pacbrake and Banks and his recommendiation was to go with the Pac.

Now if I can just round up the confidence to tackle this job myself I could save some money for the electric running boards the wife wants.

Any thoughts as to best place to purchase the Pacbrake?

It's not a hard job to do.
Get it from Lary here through the on line store.

My PacB works down to 1200RPM coming down my street @6% grade in 4th gear, truck empty of course. I actually have to give it throttle to make the stop sign. Don't know if Banks or Jacobs can do that as I believe the Pac has some different flapper on the butterfly that is spring operated or assisted. Anyway it works really great. My friend has a Banks on his 2001 and he says that it is not as good as my PB after riding in my truck.
