Pac Brake Install '05 48re
Hi all,
I've been lurking around for a while but, this is my first post. Love you guys' ideas and knowledge.
I am aobut to purchase a Pacbrake PXRB for my Dodge. They say it is easy to install. However, I've never done anything but oil changes and fuel filters on my Dodge.
Can someone tell me if it really is easy to install on the automatic engine? Any suggestions, or should I just pay the $400+ to have it installed?

i believe chrysler will void your drive train warranty! i don't think they approved the use of exhaust brakes until the 06 model year. if you don't care about any remaining warranty, then go for it-but you may be purchasing tranny parts down the road

Even on an 06 they will only warranty it if you have the Jake - not a Pac. Don't worry about the warranty - they are a joke anyway. The Pac is a better brake. You will need some kind of TC lockup controller on an 05 for it to work right though.

The install really is pretty easy. I tackled it in my driveway all by myself in about 3-4 hours, if I remember right. I do recommend having a helper nearby when it's time to install the actual brake. Lining everything up and tightening clamps was tough with only 2 hands. The rest is easy, just running wires and airline. After doing mine there's no way I'd pay $400 to have it done.
Oh, and by no means am I an accomplished wrench. I'm pretty much an occasional hack mechanic!

Don't have to worry about the warranty - I have 98k miles on the truck. As far as hurting the tranny, I've read several posters that said it, in no way hurts the truck.
By the way, the PXRB doesn't require a separate lock up. It is built in.
Thanks for the posts so far.

The install is very well outlined in the installation instructions, read them over, look at your truck to identify the install stuff, THEN - YOU DECIDE if it's something you feel you can tackle.
I too am not what by any standard could be described as an accomplished wrencher, but so far I have installed everything added or modded to my truck without even as much as a second pair of helper-hands.
As far as a warranty issue, you have the 2005 model year which falls into that questionable zone I believe. PacBrake has more than proved themselves in the exhaust brake arena, it would be and is a difficult thing for them to prove anything at this point in time with regards to their product causing problems. TOO many out there going down the road with VERY happy users as compared to their choice as a mfr installed standard equipment brake.
Also, since you are really not worried about the warranty per se, look at the instructions and if you think you can handle the job - GO FOR IT. Many here have installed their own without a second thought, you can too I'm sure. Your choice in the Pac Brake is a very good choice.

Fill out your signature so we can see exactly what you have. If your truck is an 05' you will need the lockup controller. Your tranny/ECM is not programmed to handle an exhaust brake. Only the 06' and 07' trucks are. As far as your warranty--- No tranny warranty due to exhaust brakes not being approved for the automatics. If you have an 06-07 no issues at all with warranty due to exhaust brakes being approved for those years with the auto/48re. Dosen't matter if it is a PacBrake or Jacobs.
