Regardless of cost, who makes the absolute best engine oil on the market?

I have been very happy with Rotella 5w-40 synthetic. I do not know if it is the best but it is a vast improvement over whatever the dealership was using. Better MPG, easier cold starts, and quieter running are the first things I noticed.

I know. Since there are so many different brands out there I figured I'm probably missing out on a few. I had never heard of Schaeffers oil before it was posted here. I want the best for my truck.

I'd probably use Royal Purple if it didn't make for a $100+ oil change.

Oil brand loyalty is like truck brand loyalty, ask a question and get hosed down. Heinz beans or Libby's beans. Joy or Sunlight for the dishes. That said, clean oil is the best oil, hands down. (This is where I plug bypass filtration, there are 3 or 4 of those systems available, brand loyalty rears it's ugly head here too. But then again, buying into that is also up to each person.) Something from one of the bigger outfits like Shell, Mobil, Sunoco or PetroCanada (up here) would be my minimum standard. Amsoil, Royal Purple or any of the other synthetics, if you have the money (plugging away on my here: or bypass filtration so you can keep it long enough to be able to afford the higher cost). Then again, technically, if it has the correct weight and API grade, you should get warranty. (My service manager here says the oil dodge runs, is like comparing draft beer to bottled. Looks and tastes just like bottled beer, there's just no label to peel when your done. It made be ESSO, by the way.) That brings in the noname stuff you find at the same place the missus buys your beans, dish soap, housewares and your underwear. Again, it's your choice. Until someone actually publishes the contents of thier additve packages (fat chance of that) or an outside firm goes systematicly through each and every oil giving very specification API has developed a test for, and then some gas chromatography, mass spectroscopy and some distructive tests that can only exist in your engine if you are a total incompitant, or commute between earth and hell delivering souls, we may never really know which ONE is best. Read the API specs in the owners manual, and do what YOU feel is best. Happy motoring!!!

Oil aside, I think the most important thing for our trucks is the filter.

Get a CI-4+ or CJ4 rated oil and you'll be fine.

I use royal purple synthetic 15 40, whatever you decide pick one and stick to it

i get mine for $95 for 5 gallon jug, and do it myself, about $100 every other oil change, or less. i was paying just $75 in dec of 05 for 5gal jugs of it. the guy i bought it from said the price went up, or he just coulndnt sell it to me for so cheap. anyhoo, i like using it, and they are right, this might go one for several pages. jimmy

Any of the top end synthetic CI-4+ diesel oils would probably be the best, whether or not they are the most cost effective is another story.

I really like the value of Schaeffer's 9000 5w-40, it is 15 bucks a gallon, has a great add pack, great HTHS specs, and provides awesome UOAs.

I don't think you can really go wrong with any name brand CI-4+ spec oil out there to be honest. Take your expected weather into consideration, and buy accordingly.

Another Vote for Rottella T syn from Wally world. I am suprised the AMISIOL rep hasn't chimed in with 25k with out an oil change stories. They are soon to follow I am sure. I know you don't care about $$$ But I think Rottella T syn every 8-10k is the best bang for the buck
