my truck is a 03 and if im not mistakin it has a one piece driveshaft, rear correct? but i also get the wheel hop and shudder.i have a local driveshaft guy that makes HEAVY duty shafts for anything, i had to keep replacing the ujoints in the front shaft, irritating as you all know, he built me a replace ment for 100 buks and the core. no more probs, been over a year. mayybe ill talk to him about the rear, have him put the zerts in the joints and all. he does this stuff to keep busy not the money.he's a pretty decent fellow.

Your truck came from the factory w/ a two piece setup if it is a long bed quadcab. If it's a regular cab or a short bed then you have a one piece shaft....

Zilla, The one piece does come with new u-joints, somewhat bigger than the originals.

Got my driveline delivered to Alaska from doghousediesel in 2 days! Yes, it's HUGE and came with heavy duty brand new u-joints on both ends. Truck is extremely smooth now, glad I went to the 1-piece and also glad I went with Aluminum, I think the 20# weight savings will be good since it's such a long span from spline on tranny to differential. Just don't forget to remove your entire carrier bearing assembly (not only the carrier bearing housing, but the bracket above the bearing also, it has "4" 15mm bolts coming down from bottom of the truck, you will need to hold the top of the bolt with an open end while unscrewing the nut from below the bracket) would suck to bend a brand new $500 driveline on the first bump you hit! :-) Has anyone polished their aluminum driveline? Would look awesome, but I think it would take forever!

Oregonian, glad to hear you are so pleased with your new drive shaft. Still can't figure out why Dodge would use such a POS failure part, I know.... to keep you coming back to the dealership to spend more and more money.

Can a 05 3500HD Quad cab, long bed, dually replace its 2-piece shaft for a aluminum 1-piece. or will the shaft twist when pulling a heavy load..Thats my concern how strong is the 1-piece or should a custom thick walled shaft be made for the bigger trucks?

The drive shaft is aluminum, but is a heavy duty piece. Its my understanding that 09and 10 trucks are coming with the same shaft stock.

Yes, it's Dodge part number 52123220AB. Go to www.dodgetruckparts.net Give them a call and ask for Brian. I got mine there for $467.50+ $50.00 shipping. The shaft is made from 6061 T-6 Aluminum which is marine grade aluminum. About 6 inches in diameter and necks down on both ends to about 3 inches to the yokes. Another place to get the 1 piece shaft is www.doghousediesel.com

Just a quick question here......
I will post pics tomorrow as I can't right now, but with the new one piece drive shaft, the procedure is basically just remove the old drive shaft and slip in the new shaft right? No alterations need to be done to the new shaft before installation?

Canuckville, you are correct, just take out the old drive shaft, don't forget to remove the old carrier bearing support brackets. There are 2 different brackets, I removed them both, just 4 bolts on bottom side of truck, pretty easy to do. If you don't, you will have clearance problems when you hit your first speed bump. My new 1 piece slid right into yolk on rear of tranny, bolted up new u-bolt on rear of driveline and I was on the road. Very happy with the new 1-piece.

Oregonian...
Can you pass along the part number for the shaft you purchased from Dog House? I am also interested in the alum single shaft for my 2004.5..

Thanks, Jeff

Pics

Hey Guys

Installed the one-piece rear drive shaft last night and here are some pics. The shaft I installed is Part # 52123220AB. For you Canadian folk, to let you know I priced out the shaft here from a local dealership and was quoted $850CAD + Tax. I followed Chips advice and phoned Brian at www.dodgetruckparts.net .......$475USD + $80USD for shipping + $35CAD for FedEX when it arrived. Far cry from $850 bucks. Here are some pics!!!

FYI....Installed shaft into my 2005 Quad Cab Long Box Dually 4X4 Automatic.
