oil consumption

anybody else have high oil use between changes?in 5,000 miles between changes it was 4 qts low.although i can,t be certain they filled it the first time, they were supposed to. i and the dealer are watching it closely this time, they said they,d never heard of oil use like that with the new cummins.but said they would take care of it.any thoughts?

Re:oil consumption

Nope. I've done 4 oil changes so far (typically 4k intervals) and I've never seen any appreciable drop in engine oil levels.

Any indications of leaks?

Re:oil consumption

I've only got about 8000 miles on my rig, but it hasn't lost a drop yet. I'm going to change mine every 10K miles...a compromise between the "severe duty" 7500 and the "normal" 15,000 recommended in the manual.

When I check the oil, I always make sure i'm parked on level ground and that the engine has been sitting for a half hour or so. Its amazing how the slope of some driveways can make it look like you are a few quarts low.

Re:oil consumption

I have noticed a loss in oil. I am at 18K and I was about a quart low. This has me a little concerned. I am dropping by the dealer tomorrow for a new slider window and am going to mention it. Last change was 15K on a 7500 interval. I am sure I will get the same response about never hearing about them loosing oil, so I guess it is up to me to figure it out.

Re:oil consumption

I have never had any appreciable oil consumption or loss on any of the cummins I've had. I change oil every 7K, and always have, and I'll typically be down about a qt.

This is same story on my 2003.

Re:oil consumption

I've got 19K on mine and have not seen any oil loss except when I pulled the drain plug ;D.
I have pulled a trailer accross the U.S. during the month of June/July running wide open and haven't had a problem. Just my .01 worth.

The 3,750 interval only applies if you live in California. Read the fine print.

Re:oil consumption

mine never uses a drop between changes. I change the oil in mine at every 5500 miles. I think it probably overkill but its cheap insurance.

That does not sound right. May want to have the dealer check that out. You might have a leak somewhere.

Re:oil consumption

my book has 2 options 3750 severe, 7500 standard. i will check the book again though. i have a seperate service book that states these intervals. Ca is long way from WV! anyway it has never moved between changes.

Trust me....read the fine print. The only trucks that require 3,750 oil changes are those with California emissions. All others recommend every 7,500 for "severe" use (Schedule B) and every 15,000 for "light" use (Schedule A). Either way, the oil level shouldn't be dropping between changes.

Re:oil consumption

no usage here. let the last change go 9600 miles with no loss. I will not let it go that long again though. 6000 per from here on out.

I should have done an analysis.... :-
