oil changes

TBN is in the oil, and gets used as the oil wears. The UOA will tell you TBN. If you want to run longer, make sure the TBN is high enough.
10,000 miles or every month. Whichever comes first.

so how do i find out what the tbn's are in my oil.i have never even heard of these abbr you guys are throwing out,i usually change about 6000 and everythhing has been ok, i just pump a after market fass fuel system on my truck, will that have anything do do with more carbon or exhaust temps being higher cause of more fuel..is there a test i can buy to check the tbn's in my oil? and where do you guys get the better oil filters,i use fram, but was concidering starting to use wick from napa. i do add 2 strokeoil to my fuel for some lubrisity.

From the Blackstone Labs web site:
"What is a TBN, and who uses it? In short, a TBN (total base number) measures the amount of active additive left in a sample of oil. The TBN is useful for people who want to extend their oil usage far beyond the normal range."

Since I don't do oil analysis I just go by the owners manual. I use the severe schedule which for my truck is 7500 miles. I get a Mopar oil filter from Walmart and usually pick up my oil there too. In the winter months I use Rotella 5W40 synthetic, in the summer I use what ever decent brand 15W40 dino oil is on sale.

Amen. The only filter to the best of my knowledge that Cummins came right and said don't use.
I wish the wally world by me had the mopar filters, they only carry the fram ones. Eh well at like 5.30 or so a pop the baldwins aren't too bad on the wallet.

Well, I guess I stand by my post#4 on this thread. It appears everyone is talking about the same thing as far as TBN #.
If oil change intervals, using analysis, are based on the remaining effectiveness of the additive to control acids in the crankcase, without the presence of sulfur in the fuel oil, I can see why some would or could extend oil change intervals base on the remaining additive in the oil.
That still does not address the Carbon Issue generated by the Third Event.
You can sample your oil using a Vis Guage, provided you can get about 2oz to use. It will tell you how thick or thin the oil is. Thick is carbon, thin is fuel dilution. You run a sample with new oil first before you add it to the engine for the baseline.
Now all we need to know is how much carbon in the oil is to much.??
Anybody know?

I use the Fleetgaurd filter and the Delo 400LE oil, never had no problems, Whatever you do dont use fram... Espeacially if u have a lot of high performance mods... Ive seen and heard of the motor sucking the insides of the oil filters internally... Just a suggestion... I also change my oil, clean air filter, rotate tires between 3000 and 7500, just depending on the weather, warmer temps, sooner, colder not as much... If im pulling, anything, i change before and after...

Donaldson ELF7349 is 15 microns absolute. Not going to get much better than that from a full flow. Heavy truck shops should have them.
