Well I have 116k on my truck now so I've changed the oil a few times. Normally I crack the fill cap, pull the drain plug, and while its draining spin off the old filter and put on the new. Used to up until the last 2 times I changed it the filter never drips a bit, just wipe off the seal and screw on new filter. Now last time and today when I've cracked the filter loose I get a flood of oil out and down my arm.
Anyone else have this happening? Something maybe clogged up not letting the oil drain back? This was a mopar filter I took off and don't remember what I had on it last time. Usually I use a fram(which I did again this time) or a purolator filter.

 

Mine does the same thing (little flood of oil downt he filter sides) but I'm using a breadbag over my filter so there isn't a mess at all.
I can't remember ever changin the oil filter and NOT getting oil all down the side.

 

I have serviced many of these trucks over the years, and have always noticed that some seemed prone to spilling oil over the filter when I loosen it, and some don't. Never seen anything I can attribute it to, and never seen any problems associated with it. The filters used have generally been Mopar or Fleetguard.

 

I wait until the pan is drained before I change the filter.
I don't know if it makes a difference, but I get only a tiny weep of oil drip from the filter.

 

Same here. I pull the plug then go get the filter wrench. By the time I crawl back under the pan is nearly drained. I never have any oil down the sides.


As a side note and, not to start a filter war, but I would stop using Fram filters on the Cummins!! A little research here will explain why.

 

Well maybe it had something to do with the mopar filter, don't know. Thanks for the tip rockcrawler. Hit 2 deer tonight on the way to work with it and other than license tag mia it barely wrinkled the bumper. The trooper was like wow you hit 2 and thats it!

 

It's temperature dependent. The hotter the oil is, the more I get running down my arm! (blame Murphy)

Oh, and Walmart (and other places) carry Mopar filters for $12, no reason not to go OEM.

 

Yeah... always with a little down the arm here too... regardless of drain status. I do the plastic bag trick as well.

And don't use FRAM!!! There are enough decent filters at good prices that you shouldn't have to use one that would potentially void your warranty.

Fram has changed their filter glue that was a problem several years ago. They did pay to repair several engines that got damaged by the old filters.
Fram filters are just fine now. Using a Fram filter will not void your warranty.

 

When changing oil I crack cap, loosen filter but do not remove and then start oil draining. I wait until oil draining starts to slow down and they spin filter off with no oil drips or runs on filter.
Forget where bit I read that the draining oil pulls some oil from filter. Works for me and now at 172k. Changed oil on Friday with this same method. I use fleetguard filters.

Well it seems that I do the same things the rest of you do and never had a problem til now. Is there anything that could have blocked an oil passage or something keeping it from draining back?

 

I drain the pan completely before I change the filter. Reason being, I use a Fumoto plug and drain directly into three 1gal jugs and also take a sample for oil analysis. Once that is done I close it up and switch out the filter. My filters are half full and have never spilled oil out. I use Fleetguard Stratopore 16035.

OP, perhaps it was a different filter that caused your spill over. But I am just guessing. What oil did you use?

I also echo 'don't use Fram'. You can grab Fleetguards and Mopars from Geno's Garage for pretty good prices. I just ordered a box full of 16035. Donaldson's are great too.

 

I think the oil drains back out of the pick up tube and pulls oil out of the filter. Mine has been half full of oil every time I have changed it. My oil level also goes up and down about a quart so I guess it is that amount that the filter is low coming back to the pan.

 

I ALWAYS punch a small hole in bottom of filter and let it drain out prior to turning the filter.
This is A COMMON PRACTICE when servicing big rigs.

 

Ive used Fleetguard Stratopore 16035's since day one, and I have never had a single drop of oil seep down while changing the filter.
